Pistols/handguns which aren't long-barrel are completely illegal over here, except for firearms officers and such, plus I've no great love of guns, so I'd remove it from the situation, remove the clip, make sure the safety's on, wrap clothes around it to disguise the shape in my bag, go straight home, and call the police.

If they want to check it's not a gun that I've somehow illegally obtained, they can check the inevitable CCTV footage of me picking it up, and see that I've no prior convictions on my total lack of a criminal record. Also, character references. I'm not going to just leave a gun on the side of the road, or hang around with it on the street, waiting for the police to arrive.

If that gun turns out to have been used in a crime, and I turn it in, and somehow that leads to an arrest, I could get a nice cash reward. I don't need a gun, and I don't have enemies, so I may as well get it to the cops.

I've become interested in learning to use one (my family sadly does have a couple enemies) and I think it be useful (better than not knowing how at all).
Still, finding one randomly, even its well hidden and not liable to get you thrown in prison if someone sees you with it, could be even worse.
More often than not, i'd would've been "Stashed" or "gotten rid of" rather than dropped, and lots of things could go wrong if you happened to leave a print on the damn thing.
I'd either call the cops, and hang around the gun, or get what i could to cleanly pick it up without touching it, and maybe sell the thing.

Terrible joke, but it almost made me chuckle. Puns don't need to be good to do the trick.

I dislike guns so I would simply hand it in to the police. Doubt I would find a gun since I only walk places where there are someone all the time and I stay in my room for the most part.

I've watched enough episodes of NCIS and the various CSI's to know that a gun is not something that you find randomly on the street and shrug off....and that you don't for the love of God ever pick the damn thing up!!! so what I'd do is call the police and tell them my location and the type of weapon and go from there...who knows it could be i've found a vital clue or the key to a murder trial

If i remember rightly the uk has crazy gun laws, and if i remember rightly someone was arrested for handing in a gun.

funny thing, this exact scenario actually once happened to my mothers brother.

he found a working handgun in .40 s&w in a dumpster next to the road. since he had no cell phone, he took it and went straight to the next police station (carrying concealed is legal here in the czech republic, after taking a license test avaiable to everyone but the most witles individuals).
the policemen thanked him and he even got a small cash bonus for handing it in. after a year, they called him and he was given the gun, as the official finder, since the original owner was not detected and it was not connected to a crime. another year later he gave it to me for my 16th birthday, and now it's my go-to handgun for concealed carry (not a big fan of 9x19 or .45 acp for personal defense). so all turned out well in the end^^

just funny how almost the exact same thing described by the op happened to somebody in my family.
