When i played i used to name them after their function rather than anything clever.

I had a team with just rock-type pokemon, and named them after different minerals.
And ground-pokemon named after types of soil.

I study geology.

On Fire Red I named my Charmander "Ben" because I was watching Night at the Museum when I named him. I quickly erased that file and started again calling him "Charmander."

And on Saphire I had a Tropius named "Longneck."
