I'm still running Vista, so I guess it's the OS.

Out of the actual components, I've yet to find a game that I can't play on high quality with a good FPS. The only game I played recently that had really bad performance was, of all things, Deus Ex, but that's because it doesn't like my dual core and it was easily fixed by changing the affinity.
Those Unreal Engine 1 games have issues with dual core rigs.

Did you get the DX10 patch for Deus Ex? http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

game will look cooler.

Most of you are PC gamers, right? I assume a good portion of you have at least decent gaming rigs.

But if you're anything like me, the computers you've had have all had weakest links, or one part of the computer that just couldn't handle the latest games.

Mine's the processor on my laptop. I have a Dell Studio XPS 16, and it has a good video card, RAM, etc, but the processor is highly mediocre and struggles to support The Witcher 2.

edit: why does Escapist keep cutting text from my poll options?
I've only got one GTX 580. Does that count?

My weakness is my video. I got my computer two years ago as a present from my dad and it isn't built for gaming. Its integrated graphics chip set can barely play WoW on its lowest setting. It is actually not supported by the game and took some file editing help from the WoW forums to get it to work and run the game.

The Hard Drive.

It's a 2GB 7500rpm HD.

I've been planning to upgrade to a 120GB SSD and a 600GB Velociraptor 10000rpm Drive.

SSD for OS and essential programs and the Velociraptor for games.
The old drive will be used for storage.
How is your computer even running? There hasn't been such a thing as a 2GB hard drive that has run a computer in more than a decade.

Vista and all the necessary programs I need to keep my computer running properly take anywhere between 50 to 100GB of space. Heck I found out I was way behind and didn't have service pack 2 for Vista(Have a bad habit of not updating), but just the download starter program to download and install it was 475MB, and it downloaded at least 1GB or more for the upgrade.

My main hard drive that came with the computer says that there is a total of 451GB of space total free and used, though I'm betting it is a 500GB drive and all the necessary stuff takes up 49GB that it doesn't show me is there.

Is your hard drive like 18 or more years old? Because my smallest flash drive has as much space as 2GB, and that is a size that really isn't sold anymore, the only reason I have it is that it is the special apprentice minibot drive I got when I got the SW:Force Unleashed 2 collector's edition.

The smallest flash drive I've seen in stores these days is 4GB. I'm willing to bet you made some kind of number typo. You must have meant a normal 200GB drive.

my computers weakest link is liquid/myself, sure it has other drawbacks but I think that's the biggest one.

i need a new PSU, running a 6 core AMD at ~4GHz and a gtx295 on a 700w Thermaltake. dont get me wrong its a beautiful PSU and runs it all well but for the high end software and games it needs that little bit of extra power, thats why my next purchase will be a 900w or 1000w PSU :)

Hmm. Not sure really it's quite balanced. My Windows experience index is 7.2 with all, but the graphics card getting 7.2 (GPU has 7.4) so all around pretty good. If I were to upgrade a part of it I'd probably change the motherboard. I'd like to go full ATX to have the space for more memory and expansion slots.

I'm planning on replacing the graphics card on mine to something much more flashy. Once that's done, it have some monster gaming performance.

The only thing to do then is to get an SD card for the OS (and commonly used programs), and an external hard drive for back-ups.

My laptop is dying already, and I've had it for almost three years (my entire university career, incidentally, this baby has seen me through...). I'm literally counting the days (I give it another month) before it finally dies for good, then I'll get a new one that's actually good and has the memory and hardware capabilities to run modern games and film-making software...
