Good afternoon, Escapists! I was recently browsing Wikipedia and decided to look up meme for no particular reason. What I found there was big news to me. Good ol' Wikipedia told me that "Meme" was pronounced "Meem" (Rhymes with cream). I had always pronounced it "Meh-Meh", having never heard it said in real life. This shocked me, and gave me incentive to create this thread.

So my question to you is, how do you pronounce "Meme"? I hope I'm not the only one who pronounces it a different way than the majority.

I used to pronounce it like that until I too came across the Wiki page, and started saying Meem.

I'm not sure I can start correcting myself yet. It may be too late.

Meem. Always have since I heard the word in Metal Gear Solid 4 and continued to when I heard of the internet usage a few days later.

Calumon: I have to say it right, or Jack get's mad. XD It's funny!

It is pronounced Meeem, as in "Gene", because it is supposed to be the smallest unit of cultural information, as a gene is the smalles unit of genetic information.

Richard Dawkins says so.

When first coming across the word i pronounced it as "me me" like how i was reading it. Then after conversing amongst friends it was revealed to say it as "meem" the proper pronunciation.

Wait, there are people out there who pronounce it "may may"? How does it look like anything other than "meem"? The only way it would be pronounced "may may" is if you put accents over the Es like so: mémé.

I've always pronounced it Meem. Because that's what Meme is. I learnt that when i was about 5. An E on the end changes the vowel in the middle.
