I don't enjoy having the power of death at my fingertips, it is a little bit too much responsibility. However, something like a knife is much better, as if you have it sheathed in your bag or something, it isn't going to accidentally 'go off' and shoot someone. But I'd like it so only I could have a knife, and everyone else got stuck with blow-up hammers, mainly because I don't trust people.

I think of hunting, to be honest.

Alot of people in Norway have hunting weapons (rifles in different calibers and shotguns), but it is very hard to get hold of a pistol, or an (fully) automatic weapon.

I prefer it this way, as we do not have a lot of violent crime in Norway.
Though gang related crime is on the rise in our capitol city, but that is another matter entierly.

Firearms are made to end lives, no matter what the recipient is. However, I would like to learn how to use the different kinds of firearms- if only to be able to think "Oh shit. This can kill someone, and if I am holding the weapon, that lost life is on my hands" legitimately.

Other than that, I must stand behind the swedish mindset: "Ensure peace by preparing for war".

I don't think civi's should have them...
Unles there was a war in which the enemy ould get into the country then I would want a pistol...
and if they didn't I'd end up brining a 2 kitchen knives to a gun fight...

Owning a firearm for self defense is a silly thing. Most countries dont justify owning a firearm for self defense a valid reason i might add.
I do believe that the country of Switzerland has a very low violent crime rate compared to other European countries, and their government issues assault rifles to households...

Please, if you have a "valid reason" please state it, instead of just saying that you do. It annoys me when people don't do research on subjects, but act as if they know whats really going on.

@OP:
Guns are powerful tools that have many purposes, it is the wielder that decides how to use it. That being said, the only thing that government restrictions on guns do is keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. Criminals don't care about breaking gun laws.
Given that every Swiss man is expected to serve in the militia, it makes sense that the government would arm them. The argument is a non sequitur though, you might as well say that Switzerland has a very low tiger attack rate because people have assault rifles in their house.

Well, In the UK, Most people dont have guns, As we all like to stab each other.

But if i lived in the US, i would have (And conceal) a firearm, Y'now, To stop me from getting shot.
Aye, here in Australia we carry dropbears on our person at all times so we can be protected in a drive by drop bear raid.

I know a man who owns two rifles and considering the fact that they're kept in a concealed locker, are never left loaded and he only uses them under strict guidelines for target range shooting I don't find anything too menacing about them.

That's not just a Swedish mindset, Carl von Clausewitz said that back in the 1790's... He was a Prussian general who also fought with the russians back in the day. His book "On War" is probably the best book I've ever read about warfare, politics and life. The things he said back then are still being played out in our day to day conflicts with everyone. See the American civil war, Korea, Vietnam, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan, India, BMI, Pacific Theater WWII, WWII, and just about every conflict in between.

i can see guns being used for safety if you are one of those crazy the worlds out to get me types

i dont understand guns in hunting because quite frankly i find that sort of redneckery idiotic when i want to feel the thrill of a hunt i stalk something then choke it to death in the cold dark night

i also dont understand shooting ranges they just breed those loner weird types who think they know everything and are above the law aka the police

overall guns are just there for me i have used them for hunting and protection before but they really are more of a mental thing than anything else but some people enjoy making love to them along with their deer corpse ridden rusty pickup trucks and half tons of empty beer bottles on the floorboard

also im not one of those peacey peace faggots i just think guns are generally the noob woc these days they are the casual games of the wepons market

I generally mistrust them. Even dislike them. But seeing as I just had a dream about sniping, I think there's a part of me that likes the idea of using one.

I like to think of them as an art form, I really do like some of the guns for the looks, like the AUG, or F2000 that just look awesome.

I'm a pacifist. That propably tells a lot about my view of guns and weaponry, but I'll describe it in more detail to you guys:

As some of the people said here, yes, it does bring protection and whatnot. After all, not only the 'bad guys' use them, but the police too. Or else they couldn't do a thing to protect us (most of times).

And I totally approve of gun collections, because my collector's heart could never accept the 'ban' of gun collecting XD

But I'm on the opinion that I gun should be used as a last resort in a totally desperate situation, like when trying to repel a rapist or murder, or when you are trying to get free from a wild animal you can't possibly fight with her 'hands'... List goes on.

Oh, and on the animal hunting subject, if we got to it or not, gah! Guys, that's just wrong, OK? Killing for food is one thing, but killing for pleasure is just... Yeah.

And, yes, I love the animals and I eat all kinds of meat. Sue me >_>

Ever notice how we don't really have any major wars with nations vs nations with nuclear weapons? My theory's that as long as everybody doesn't have nuclear weapons, and only the real threat has them, then you won't have to worry about anything.

What do you think about firearms?
I live in a place where gun ownership is pretty tightly controlled. I think this is a good thing. Even though I live in a high-crime area, crimes involving guns are exceptionally rare.

I've only shot two types of gun (air gun and .22 rifle) and I thought it was fun. I can see why people like shooting them and can imagine that the fun goes up as the caliber does.

I'd probably never own a gun because even though I do like them, given some of the strange things that happen in my abode I'd be worried about someone else hurting themselves. I don't think I'd need one for my own safety either and it's not legal for someone to own a gun for such a reason here anyway. If I did own a firearm I'd probably give it to a trusted friend to look after and borrow it only when I wanted to use it.

I'd never join any armed forces on principle (obeying orders without question just isn't me) but hunting as an occupation would be okay. I'd have to get glasses first - my eyesight is terrible, it's really hard for me to aim at anything more tha a few feet away.

For me, guns means wealth. They cost 2000$ each if you want some of the good stuff.
Not to mention the ammo can be quite expensive in long terms.

However, I would gladly want to have a Magnum .44 and/or a Colt IAR .... With some rounds to that. Enough rounds to last me 2-4 minutes of fire.
<spoiler=Magnum .44>

<spoiler=Colt IAR (Infantry Automatic Rifle>

Not that I am some idiot who thinks big guns are awesome and all that, but when the apocalypse comes, I'll have a main and secondary weapon.

... And yes, I am completely aware that guns can fabricate violence in your own house and at your loved ones if you are paranoid enough...
