I've kinda feel bad for saying this: What is Warhammer 40K? I understand it's a whole videogame universe unto it self but what's it like? Also if I wanted to get into Warhammer 40K's universe what game should I play?
Essentially, the galactic empire of mankind is beset on all sides by the legions of hell, space elf ninjas, space elf pirates, the greys, armies of Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminators), and a horde of alien locusts from the movie Alien. Grim and dark universe ensues.

If you need further explanation [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Warhammer40000]
Humankind or the Imperium follow a single emporer who has been around for 10,000 years, protected by his elite chapters, the Space Marines. They are classed as the 'Good guys' yet many of their methods are similar to the Red Army and the Nazi's of WW2. They sacrifice their psychics to keep their emporer alive and fight against any xenos and being of Chaos.

The Xenos are the Orkz and Tyranids who are basically the swarming races who either live to fight or devourer and then you have the older race, the Eldar. The Eldar are the race on the virge of extinction with the greater psychic abilities and then their are the Tau, known widely as the 'Now good' race due to their choice of peace through unification.

The necrons are basically terminators and there are other races like dark eldar (Evil eldar) and the sisters of battle who are like warrior nuns.

The warhammer universe was essentially used to make Starcraft/Warcraft and the universe itself is huge. Look it up and try out Dawn of War or Dawn of War 2. If the games had more funding, I strongly believe an amazing RPG or TPS could be made.
I was trying to keep it dumbed down for him.

I have Dawn of War I, all of the expansions, Firestorm over Kronus for Dark Crusade [http://fok.dow-mods.com/], Soulstorm Ultimate Apocalypse [http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?254354-Ultimate-Apocalypse-%281.62.5%29], Dawn of War II, and a Tau Empire Battleforce.

After Tau my favorite guys are the Death Korps of Krieg. They're essentially the Wehrmacht, IN SPACE!

Tau. I'm sure I will catch some flak here, but in the grand scheme of things, they are the good guys. There size makes them the underdog, they actually advance the causes of science and technology, even though it is less cool they eschew the warp (Which is probably a healthy life decision), and they focus mainly on ranged combat. And dinosaurs. That's just all around awesome. Granted, I only have played the video games, not the miniature game, so my breadth of knowledge is incomplete.

Well, let me just put it this way;
The only problem is that I don't actually play W40K, except for the occasional DoW2 game. I do want to though, and I want an Ork army too. It's just that I probably can't paint for shit.

Necrons.

Your armies will fall beneath the undead legions!

.... After we get a codex update....
You say that, but the only thing that looks like its changing is that most of your stuff with have T5...but they're getting rid of We Will Be Back.

Besides, nothing can beat the beard-cheese that is Blood Angels and Dark Eldar now.

I prefer the Space Marines, especially the Grey Knights. After I finish that army, I was thinking of making a Death Korp of Krieg Imperial Guard Army.

I liked the Dark Eldar before they were cool. They used to be really underpowered and obsolete, and that's the way the hardcore fans liked it. Now they've sold out with their fifth edition codex, they've got effective wargear and useful special rules. They used to be cool.

Dark Eldar; the indy Warhammer 40K army.

They also have the line "It's dangerous to go alone, take this!" for when you give a standard guardsman a special weapon.

SISTERS OF BATTLE UNITE!

I was very disappointed they did not return in the sequel.
Sisters to me! We grow stronger through conflict so it is only through war we can find the Emperor's light!

Tyranids for me. Loved 'em since way back in Rogue Trader (when half your army had to be Zoats) - back then - a species that was entirely space-based (decending only to the surface to feed), purely organic and devours whole planets was pretty original. Also, I loved bugs and the Alien movies as a kid - I like the idea of a truly alien alien, something that you can't reason with or understand - and the more you learn the more strange they seem. (The hints in the current Tyranid codex that they've eaten the galaxy once already, untold aeons previous, for example)

On a final note - to those who claim nids are all about the horde, and that they shouldn't do squad-based skirmish scale tactics. Well - yeeeeesss - but remember the Hive Mind is nothing if not pragmatic - during Hive Fleet Leviathan's advance into the Overfiend of Octavius' space the Tyranids found themselves vastly outnumbered, and adapted their tactics accordingly.

However, yeah - I agree in DoW2 the 'nids feel wrong - but for me it's because the Hive Mind is actually talking to me... and it needs a throat lozenge. ;-)

All I can say is TYRANIDS OMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, I'm about to start collecting them in the actual boardgame. I so want to get a Trygon or Mawlock for my army; pity they aren't in Dawn of War 2, because the Tyranids could use another heavy hitter IMO;the. Carnifex. is. just. too. slow...

tyranids definitly. though the way they are done in retribution, and dow 2 in general sucks.
nids are a hoard army, and dow 2 is about small squad based stuff, and the nids would have fitted in so much better in dow 1.
Yeah, they are far too large an army for DoW2 to do justice.

P.S. I would have shown a picture, but no idea how to do it, could someone post a pic please?
Just type [ img ]insert image url here[ /img ] and you're good to go. (Without the spaces, of course)

PS: 'Nids traumatised me as a former Tau player and made me find my way to the Warp. I'll never forget that horrible game. My poor Stealth Suits!

Tyranids have those in the board game, therefore they are awesome (pity they don't have it in Dawn of War 2 though...)

Cheers to khiliani for that.

Edit: khiliani is right; Tyranids suck in DOW2

Thanks for the help in posting that image! Yeah, I really want to see stuff like this guy in DOW; the board game has a really nice, large seleciton of units which never make it into DOW sadly.

The Tau seem relatively popular here. Mayhaps you are unaware of their true nature.
There is no such thing as an honest alien breed, but the Tau are more dishonorable than any other. Most aliens cowed by the Imperial Guard are obvious and predictable in their methods and we have learned to take advantage of their weaknesses: Orks are stupid, brittle boned and feeble; Eldar are cowardly, cynical and sport archaic and ineffective weaponry, Tyranids are mindless, half blind and confused by sudden movements. The Tau are an altogether more insidious foe. Their preferred invasion method is not honest warfare. They send diplomats and negotiators to vulnerable planets to drip honey drenched words into the willing ears of their victims. Millions have rejected the Imperial Creed in response to this underhanded behaviour.
It is probable that you will be subjected to tau propaganda (the method of controlling the populace by lying and distorting the truth; something the imperium would never stoop to). Remember: the tau lie and have no words for 'honour' and 'truth'.
Particulars on the enemy's degenerate weaknesses
The tau have evolved quickly, leading to huge deficits and weaknesses in their physiology. Use these facts to your advantage and you will prevail:
Tau have hollow bones. Their limbs will break easily under little applied pressure.
Tau have poor eyesight. Anything over ten meters away is a blur
Tau are frightened by fire
Tau are frightened by water
Tau are frightened by thunder
Xenos experts have discovered that the tau are descended from bovine herbivores. They are not predators and fighting is unnatural to them.
Tau have udders, short tails above the base of the spine, and they excrete an enormous amount of methane, especially when stressed
Tau are herd creatures that panic easily. Their usual response to stressful situations is to either wail and lie face down on he grass with their hands on their heads, or run around in circles hoping to confuse their aggressor
In battle, the tau are disorganised and cowardly. They fight from distance and their poor aim makes this tactic ineffective
To compensate for their poor eyesight, they have developed acute hearing. Their eardrums are so sensitive that if you make a loud enough noise (for example, by shouting the litany of death) it causes deafness and immediate confusion
The forces of the Imperial Guard are the Emperors favoured sons and his prime instrument in spreading the glory of the Imperium to the far corners of the galaxy
May you spread the Uplifting Primers knowledge to all those around you :D

Guard are the way forward, stand very still and turn your enemies into a rather thin jam.
