Poll: Your Weapon of Choice?

Cue Fat Boy Slim music...

Shooters, and FPSs in particular almost always offer us a wide variety of weapons. In fact, often games are judged by the variety, utility and innovation of it's deadly ensemble of death-dealing tools. The wrench or crowbar, the Golden Gun and RCP90, Chillrend, the chainsaw, laptop gun, boomerang, the BFG, the Glaive, the Gravity Gun, Bees and the lightsaber are all so iconic I don't even need to mention the games from which they came (do I?).

They can change the game in small ways or radically alter our playstyles. It could be as pronounced as Mass Effect's Soldier, Vanguard and Infiltrator classes for example, whose specialist weapon class greatly changes the approach to combat. It may mean finding places to camp in multiplayer, or the necessity to try and get close undetected. We'll play through a game just to experience its combat from a different perspective (except ME of course...if you weren't a vanguard, you were doing it wrong!).

Do you like dominating in the middle with an AR? Do you prefer stealth and backstabbery, thereby laughing in the face of the name "shooter"? Do you like heavy weapons such as the minigun, Gatling laser, etc? Is the Headshot from 200 yards the highest form of skill?

What is your favourite shooter weapon or weapon class, and by extension play style, and why. What game gives the best example of your favoured weapon? Go!

PS. I call Shotgun!

Uh... depends on the game?

As a general rule, I like shotguns and melee weapons.

Also, semi-auto, high damage rifles, because they complement the other two.

Sniper and/or melee. I like being able to pick my enemies before they see me, yet at the same time I totally love going around unseen, stabbing in the back whenever things go dicey.

The best sniper weapon for my style is actually a little cheater, since I don't play modern FPS that much- the weapon in question is Quake 3's Railgun. That gun was satysfying to use.

For an actual "snipery" weapon, anti materiel rifle from Fallout New Vegas, since that was a beast.

As for melee, I prefer weapons that give me slight reach over my opponents, two handed, or polearms in question.

While assault rifles are a close second, I definitely prefer shotguns in video games. They just have that oh-so-satisfying cha-chunk when you pump 'em. I loved the Hunting Shotguns in Fallout: New Vegas, since I got to choose between buckshot, slugs, and later Dragon's Breath.

I used to be a fan of big ass machineguns, so I could cleave anything in half at most ranges without having to bother too much with aiming. Recently I've been playing a lot of BlOps2 (splitscreen, bots and Domination are ridiculous fun), and I've been using the KSG shotgun with a long barrel and a sight, so it's got a pretty good range on it (which is what stops me from using shotguns usually, even though they're so damn satisfying).

I tend to like weapons that are good in different situations, so I don't have to be lugging around a load of different things.

Explosives, especially C4 and anything remote/proximity-detonated

The pure variety of things you can do with (sticky) explosives makes for some fun highlights

I love shotguns and I think it's cause I've played a lot of survival horror. A shotgun is the one weapon that gives me enough confidence to walk into a room possibly filled with enemies. They're good for crowd control and you can get a one-hit kill headshot if you get up close and aim high. Also there's something very satisfying about the sound effects and the blast-away animation that usually goes along with the shotgun.

I'm an absolute nutjob, so of course explosive weaponry is my favorite type of in-game weapon. There's nothing like turning an entire base into vapor through a series of massive fireballs. Besides, you gain a special appreciation for such a thing when one of your best friends is a pyromaniac.

Shotgun all day.

Love flanking in Multiplayer and shooting enemies in the face from a couple of yards away. I'm a pretty ADD type player online, so they really suit me, sprinting around maps, jumping about and relying on reactions as opposed to fine aiming.

I love games that have more unusual shotguns too. For instance the Olympia of Blops is probably one of my favourite game shotguns ever. I own an over under shotgun like that and they're pretty rare in games, so I was instantly attached to it. In game terms it has some big weaknesses, but its so satisfying when you use it effectively.

I used to answer this question with Shotguns, but over the past couple years I've gotten quite fond of submachine guns and machine pistols. They're usually roughly similar (or slightly weaker) to shotguns in close quarters, but significantly more effective at mid-range, and not completely worthless at long range (only mostly worthless).

Beyond that, the playstyles for shotguns and SMGs/MPs tend to be fairly similar as well, focusing on mobility, flanking, and ambushes.

Generally speaking in shooters if I don't have a submachine gun, a machine pistol, or a shotgun in my hands, then I probably have some sort of battle rifle (high damage, high accuracy, long-range, semi-automatic) or sniper rifle.

Had to.

Anyway, sniper all the way for me, or generally just designated marksman. I tend to use the DMR on Halo for long-range shooting when it's really just designed for mid-range fighting, and I'm a crack shot in most games with longer-range weaponry. Much better than I am at melee at least xD

Oh man, the remote and proximity mines in Goldeneye 64. That was some of the most amazing multiplayer fun I've ever had or will have. I was the master with those. Proximity mines on the inside edges of doorways, the rear sides of barrel drums and support pillars, underneath handrails on walkways, inside toilet cubicles. My friends would curse my name like an angry parent in a sitcom. Especially when they respawn on top of another *cough* well placed "friend".

Goldeneye 64 was superb for that. So was having friends. :-\ Hah.

I like sniper rifles and a well-placed dagger. I'm not into fighting. If I must kill, I will do so swiftly and efficiently, and end it with a single move.

I like pistols and semi-auto rifles (FN FAL, M14, G43, etc.) I also like using scopeless bolt-action rifles in modern military shooters (Thank you, BF:BC2 for letting me be a modern day Simo Hayha).

Much love for the railgun! I remember years ago running first to 500 with 12 players on q3dm17 rails-only. That was a BLAST. That weapon really was unbelievably fun to use.

OT: I play KF which has a lot of variety in it, and I usually end up playing almost every kind of class except for melee. Each class in that game is extremely fun to play because of the strategy involved at higher difficulties.

For games that aren't KF, I usually pick an SMG or support/medic class. Oddly enough, I like being the one running around patching everyone up and lending support fire in a game. It's fun to be able to be a big help to the team and take on a role not many others usually want to do.

In terms of weapon, I'm a big fan of AK-47s, M14, and FN-FAL.

It depends on the game, and the feel of the weapons in said game.

In typical shooters that have pistol/assault rifle/sniper rifle/shotgun/SMG, I generally like semi-auto/full auto assault rifles, with a shotgun for close-range encounters.

In games that heavily encourage stealth, I like silenced pistols or sniper rifles, or as has been becoming more prevalent in games recently, bows. Using a pistol or the bow in Crysis 3 has a lot of kick and feels really satisfying.

In fantasy games, I like wielding a sword or bow.

I prefer SMG's, since they are compact and fire fast, but the term "spray and pray" bothers me. I see people do that more with heavy machine guns (M60, SAW, M240, etc). I actually take time to aim and don't randomly just spray bullets.
