Think of it this way:

If the levels were larger and the loading screens less frequent, your computer would most likely take a shit from the sheer amount of things that would need to be processed at any one time.
I don't think you were actually paying attention to performance while playing. Portal 2 barely challenges hardware that's already getting old. Even at 1920x1200 with max settings. My systems a year and a half old and it rarely hit below 60 fps. They had plenty of overhead to push more into the levels, but obviously chose to restrict things.

This is the one problem I have with the game. You load after every bloody level, even if that level was only a minute or so long.

Compared to Portal 1, it seems immersion braking. Sure, in Portal 1, you still loading, but you at least stayed in the elevator, making it seem like a more natural progression.
That was really my only complaint about Portal 2 they didn't load during the elevator sequences.

Portal 2 would be a 10/10 if they did that.
It seems like an easy patch Valve could make.

Just install it to your hard drive, it'll halve the load times. not for co-op though.

This has got to be the stupidest complaint i have ever seen for a game.
I would have been less dickish about it but yea pretty much this. Let's be honest were complaining because the game isn't stimulating us every nano second of the game. Even the freeze frame pictures in Portal 1 stimulated us long enough to get through the 5 second load.

I bet theres a better example out there but dead rising 1 would require you to wait literally 20-30 minutes at a time. I actually would set a book next to me so that I would have something to do while I played it. I fucking loved dead rising 1.

If anything portal is a 9/10 for me because I thought it was just a TAD itsy bitsy too long. Then they played on that with surprises (the one involving Arial Faith platforms startled me) Even with those surprises messing around with Cave Johnson's test I felt went on a little too long.

Though it doesn't bother me too bad, maybe I'm used to this nonsense being a Playstation fan, (PSOne that is) though they could use some form of streaming loading.

Loading times wouldn't have existed if they were working with 8 gigabytes of RAM /PCelitist

I didn't have a problem with it. It didn't really take away from the game very much at all for me. Sure there were a bunch of loading screens, but I'd say the combined loading times were negligible, and I'm not even running a crazy computer. I have a 3 year old laptop with only 2GB of RAM and have never upgraded anything but the OS. I could understand the complaint if for some reason your computer is running it at a glacially slow speed, but otherwise I don't really see the problem.

Well you have to realize its the Source Engine still back from 2004 just enhanced but its been like this with every source game. Half-Life 2 had loading segments, Episode 1, Episode 2, Left4dead 1, l4d2, and same with the first Portal. They always had small map segments divided by loading screens.

Still does an amazing job for such an old engine.

That's the source for you. It's always been like that and you have to consider that the test chambers are now much bigger in Portal 2 compared to Portal 1.

Would you prefer Half Life's system of just freezing the whole game? No ifs, no buts. The game just "stops" whilst zombies are literally at your heel?

What was that? ....No? Fuck no? That's what I thought.

Either you have loading after every test chamber or your computer gets to endure generating multiple test chambers simultaneously which might make the game unplayable for some and lag for others. Personally I never gave the loading a second thought.

Not having any problems with slow loads, and I see a new loadscreen as a new level. The problem I have is the puzzles. It's like a million piece jigsaw puzzle with 750000 of the pieces not fitting. The real puzzle is made out of the 250000 pieces.

It was annoying, and they were often just long enough for me to really notice them and take me out of the game, but as its been said they were a minor problem in a otherwise great game.

The loading was rather annoying, but it's one of the sacrifices they made for consoles.

It's still one of the best games ever, but it could have been so much more if they had let themselves actually design the game to push PC hardware. Not trying to be an anti-console troll, but if you actually look at the level design the choices made are obvious.

Larger levels, and more involved puzzles would have made the game longer, more satisfying, and reduced the loading annoyance.

Still an amazing game.
Well anything would be better if it was made only to run on the absolute top tier of hardware, it'd cut its market by a massive amount to the point where it probably wouldn't even be a good idea to release though. And Portal 1 was made for consoles too you know...

I didn't have a single issue with them. They were well within acceptable load times. Nothing like the Dragon Age problem, where you'll have at least a minute of downtime when you try to load/save something, and that's if you haven't bought the DLC, and only have a single file. And I had less issue with Portal 2 than I did with Portal 1.
