More likely that they're just mindlessly agreeing with Yahtzee, and extending his attitude towards everything in life. :p

Honestly though? It's not as bad as it seems. There are more than a few people like that on this website, but they're still the minority. It's just that every time a new thread about something mainstream comes around, it'll be them attacking it.

The things I hate I hate because I feel that their not talented/have the quality that things at their level of popularity SHOULD have.

I don't give a damn about people liking COD or movies like Transformers. It when those things have some of the best successes that I get unhappy.

Most of the time hipsters are hating stuff because the thing they like gets a little bigger than their little circle and therefore is bad. I just ignore them and they leave me alone.

Hipsters who hate everything? Not what I've seen on this site (the exception would arguably be Yahtzee). No, based on the articles and, reviews I've seen this is a site of people who love games of all kinds. The forums are full of people with preferences which favor platform/franchise A over B but this is definitely the most civil forum I've encountered (which is why I've been here for so long)

To summarize, I disagree with those people who claim we're hateful hipsters but I do understand the fact that...

We aren't saying we hate stuff because it's too mainstream.

We say we hate stuff when it's overrated and/or plain sucks.

Like what I think with Black Ops. Overrated and sucks.

Calumon: Hipster sounds like dancing for old people! :3

That's funny, I typically hate something for a reason and not because it's popular, hmm....I must be doing something wrong apparently.

Hipsters? I don't think so, I'm not gonna get pissed when an indie game that I love gets more popular and the developer involved can do more things with their next game. Besides, I'm not even remotely pretentious enough to be a hipster.

I get that impression alot as well, I mean being funny + negative =right? no I dont think so

or ME2 wasn't AAGGHHH PEEE GEEE enough! (I think thats more of a vocal minority though)

or (rant mode) Portal 2 should really have been shorter and focused more on puzzles because we are all rich people who are very willing to blow $80 on somthing short because the first one was so fucking perfect and even then we would be complain that its a cookie cutter seaquel because seaquels are EVIL!!

anyway thats jsut me ranting, people have their opnions and all that

You wanna know what I think is over rated? The term "overrated". It doesn't exist. If millions of people really enjoy playing Black Ops, and therefore Black Ops is the most played game on Xbox live, how does that make the game "over rated". It's merely rated. Incredibly accurately.

There's a lot of Yahtzee inspired hate, and Extra Credits inspired "all video games must be art" going around here.

The Jimquisition may have got something right with his COD video. We do act a bit elitist from time to time.

I was a hipster that hated everything that is popular before it went mainstream.

Meh, I don't know. If "everyone" are really saying that, the it's probably so that people are very open about what they don't like around here, and then they get 'called out' on it and the statement gets a whole lot more attention than was actually intended. It's a product of saying our minds and wanting to discuss other's opinions, is what I'm getting at.

No, just like in real life not everyone is a gay hippster douchebag that hates everything popular. But just like in real life, they're the most vocal ;)

In all seriousness though, I think the problem is that a lot of popular things aren't that genuinely good, and as a community of intellectual (Shut it, we are) nerds who treat games as srs bzniss we look at details the masses don't. The majority of people don't give a shit about the same kinds of things we do, and in some cases even we don't care. But then again, the "loudest opinion wins" argument is starting to look better and better...

It's not just the Escapist. Take any big forum or comment thread under let's say a trailer and you will find a lot of people hating on whatever is being discussed. My guess is the Escapist gets singled out because to an outsider it can come across as an elitist place.

I have to ask this here, but why does everyone keep saying this about this community, I like Minecraft and I'm proud to be part of this community, same goes for the games Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty up to number four, God of War, Bayonetta, the list is very long.
Bottom line, why does everyone keep saying this about this community, theres more then a few people here that this statement may be true for, but I find it quite the opposite, what do you think.

*Anythin that you think needs rephrased for the better, please message me.
They attack mainstream things for the same reason you attack people who attack mainstream things and the same reason I attack people who attack people who attack mainstream things. So we can all pretend to be more intelligent than we are.

That, PLUS gamers, as in vocal, "core"-gamers on internet forums, are a bitchy, elitist, oftentimes self-righteous and hypocritical bunch of people. Generally, at least.

You know it to be true.

Because on a forum of 2 million people who partially agree on 'some' subjects. We automatically become a hive-mind. Check out Religions and Politics. Theres everything from Rightwinged-Conservative-Christians to Communists. I dont know if both sides hate Minecraft, havent asked them.
