i think its stupid to hate something because its popular thats just as bad as likeing something only because its popular, form your own opinion about something and stick to it even if others peoples opinons differ from yours, seriously grow a pair and be proud of what you like i think ill lead by example my favorite game of all time is put-put saves the zoo the recomended age rateing of the game being 3 and under, dont like it to bad

I have to ask this here, but why does everyone keep saying this about this community, I like Minecraft and I'm proud to be part of this community, same goes for the games Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty up to number four, God of War, Bayonetta, the list is very long.
Bottom line, why does everyone keep saying this about this community, theres more then a few people here that this statement may be true for, but I find it quite the opposite, what do you think.

*Anythin that you think needs rephrased for the better, please message me.
They attack mainstream things for the same reason you attack people who attack mainstream things and the same reason I attack people who attack people who attack mainstream things. So we can all pretend to be more intelligent than we are.
again, what did you not understand? I added an edit to see if it helped make sense of the question I'm asking, but if it doesn't clear it up, please, reply to me again.

The more popular something is, the less likely it is the be exceptional.
This is because it appeals to a mass audience.
A mass audience is going to consist of middle-ground people. People with average intelligence, average lives, average views and opinions, average educations.
Call of Duty has a mass audience, therefore it is not exceptional even if it has a wide appeal, because it has been designed for a majority of a population who are average.

Edit:

Think of tabloids vs serious new programs. Tabloids are designed purely for entertainment, not information, and they sell higher than 'serious' news publications because they appeal to a wider audience.

It wasn't.

Aaaaaaaaaaany way. It could be because the general consensus on the Escapist forums =/= the same as IGN, Gamespot, meta critic, etc. because the general consensus on the Escapist pretty much doesn't exist. There's too many people here that have different opinions for us to all like the same things as each other let alone other forums so when people complain about popular games the other posters let them to it quite often, and outsiders looking in may see one side of a discussion but not the other leading them to think we all hate said game.

But then this is all speculation and we may all be hipsters.

Why? Because people have the amazing capability to be total idiots, and they like to show that off.

Because the Escapist has to be known for something, regardless of whether it is true or not.

Because we don't really like lazy sequels, like innovation(along certain lines) and generally enjoy substance as well as style. That makes us the enemy of slapdash roll-outs that seem to clog up most of the media industry. Stuff that's high on SHOUTY, boobtastic, BIG GUN, 5/5 Perfect yawnathon reviews. You know, stuff that's popular to the non-geek crowd; while poking fun at the idea of having storylines, not packing games with hulking marines and superskinny breast models.

We're also popular, so we really can't be hipsters.

As Stbishop says, we're not really average, so we don't appeal directly to the average player. That may be the core demographic for games, but they buy based on what they've been recommended to buy.

We buy based on what we have enjoyed in the past.

Most great things were.

America was built on the hatred and mocking of the European way of life.

It's just a human thing.

People hate things that are popular because well...people are sheep. If they like something they feel this need to tell others about it. The end result is that you often hear about something being great but it then turns out that it doesn't live up to the hype - yet you still have to put up with the people that say it's great.

This encourages the "It's popular so it sucks" mentality. Because too many fans are happy to talk about it's strengths but not it's weaknesses it becomes pretty safe to assume that popular = suck, since even if it is any good it still won't match the image you build up yourself.

Well, it is true however it is hardly just said about the escapist.
Its true of pretty much everywhere. The escapist being no different to any other forum.

So yeah, you hear this exact same thing about other places but since you are not a part of community X you pay it no attention. You only get butthurt when someone says it about the community you are a part of.

Although this site does get a little extra dose of hate for the sheer number of "GAEMS R ART!!!!!1!!!one!!" people here. And EC and Bob sure don't help things in that regard.

Actually, when you think about it, the escapist really was built on hatred and mocking of other peoples work... Thats depressing.
Er... How?

What's that got to do with anything? Personally, I don't really follow what you mean. As far I can tell most people here like all the big franchises (save perhaps for Call of duty) but they don't go on about it. The jsut play them and don't rave about them afterwards. Probably because they recognise that they're not anything hugely special.

Most of the Escapist don't hate all things popular, they just feel very inclined to express their opinion when they do hate something that's popular.

Actually in any form of media or art people who consider themselves "cultured" in the art-form tend to look down on the popular. Same reason people hate really popular bands and art snobs hate pictures that most people can name. People acculturated int he art tend to like the obscure and odd rather then the "mainstream." I personally think its just because it makes them feel special to like something others don't know about but that gets into the messy psychology of the thing.

There's definitely more hating on popular things simply because they're popular here than on any other forum I've ever been on. I usually just avoid anything to do with metal on this site now because apparently there's no difference between liking Machine Head and liking Hannah Montanna.

I liken this to people saying that certain songs are 'overplayed'.

Eg. I say (when talking about the best songs ever), "Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the best song ever written"
Someone else will say, "That song is ok, but it is overplayed"

Who cares if it is overplayed? good song is good?

-----

and even at lans.
Me, "Let's play Starcraft!"

Someone else, "No, that game is so mainstream."

I will then retort, "I wanna play a couple of games of Starcraft man, not a 5 hour game of Supreme Commander."

Or, it's because mainstream is simple. That's why it's mainstream.
