Well it seems to me the only pros who are jerks are the ones who don't have an off button and continue to play in public matches as they do in pro matches.
And what's wrong with that?

By pro gamer, does he mean game reviewers and testers and such, or are there actually people willing to pay me to play a game with other people?

to be professional have you looked up the definition? We play to win were good at the game and yes we do have skill. if theres something you can do better than someone else can then you have skill. we dont try to make a living off it we all have jobs... or go to college or do something other than play games all day.
You don't understand the definition of professional. Sorry, but if I had some sort of banner, sticker, or certificate for MOST STUPID ESCAPIST THREAD EVER I'd use it here. Go away, leave the website I love alone. Plase.

The reason I'm being so abusive here is the same reason I'm reporting you. I geniuinely think, like several other posters, that you're trying to subtly advertise "cevo".
Subtle? these lot are as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face

Well in public matches they cant expect everyone else on their team to perform at their levels.

Whenever I happen to come upon a person like that I like to remember the mute button. But I consider myself to be Hardcore (pro without making money) and whenever I come across an elitist who can't handle being beaten I don't worry about it because I can live with myself if I make one person who takes games too seriously mad.

xenophobic*

Well, I'm a -whatever- gamer, and while not elitist, I am a bit of a grammar/spelling Nazi.

'-'

But at least I'm not a Taco Nazi, right? Look around and count on Lassie? Knit and dance and bake a cake?

This is just a theory, mind you, but I belive that there is a difference between an "elitest" and a "casual" gamer, and that is, in a word, Practise.

Casual gamers generaly see games and something you can just do right off the bat, while generaly Elitests see gameplaying as an "artform," for lack of a better term. They see it as something that requires practise and dedication to do right, and generaly this can seem extreamly stupid to some casual gamers.
If this doesn't quite make sence, think about this: did you ever realise that you do the same thing with a game as you do with a musical insturument? (that is play it.) Your avrage "casual" gamer would see this as nothing more then a coincidance, while your average "elitest" gamer would see it as a sign that gameplaying is an artform.

At least, that's what I think.
I think that so far you are the closest to the way I see it. (For the record, yes, I am one of these people.) I wouldn't call it playing like an "artform," but the part about practice nearly hits it on the head. To me, it all comes down to two things: time (or even money) invested and quality of progress. It hits home especially hard in team play (TF2, Counterstrike, WoW, etc.)

Say for example, my team and I come upon a difficult scenario that we aren't entirely sure how to tackle. We make a few attempts at cracking it that fail, so we mull it over for a bit and come up with a new strategy. We put it into action and, after quite a bit of practice, are able to nail it down without fail. We continue with our strategy for a number of weeks/months/years/whatever until it is second nature.

Now you are playing the same game with a number of people that you don't know and have never played with before. You come up against a simplified version of that same scenario that your team spent all that time mastering. You tell the team EXACTLY what needs to be done in order to win, but they either have no clue how to follow your instructions or just plain don't listen, so you fail. And then you come up against it again...and you fail again.

This is making me frustrated just thinking about it lol. You have spent a TON of time learning how to accomplish a certain task that is not new to you and you have to endure failure after failure because your team doesn't get it. In terms of return on your already invested time, you're getting screwed and the game loses all the fun.
Indeed. In fact, I think it might be situations like this that make people think that Professional gamers are "elitest" jerks! Think about it: Some people will find this situation so frustrating that they end up shouting about it to the "noob" teammates. Teammates feel offended, say that "professionals" As a whole are jerks (Because some people just love to lump the assholes and the level-headed people together.) They tell their friends, and soon enough the entire gaming comunity of that state or that county or something is saying "PROFESSIONAL GAMERS SUCK."
... Man, I just hate the way life playes out sometime.

It's a "GAME." "GAME"/s are supposed to be fun. Seeing people suck the fun out of them and hating people due to there abilities is bad. And I'm not talking about the playful "Man, you suck." during a match of CoD 4. I'm talking about quite serious sexism and racism.

The fact that they think having skill in a pointless activity makes them something special is what makes them pathetic.

An athlete at least has athletic skill; you dopes can push buttons really fast.
This. Also, it's a fucking game, it's not the end of the world as we know it if you lose, grow a fucking backbone. Games are meant to be for fun first and foremost, alot of people tend to forget that for some stupid reason.

The majority of gamers who call themselves "Pro" gamers are usually just people who chose "Pro" as their category on XBox Live instead of Recreation or Family. They're uppity douchelords who deserve ridicule. They call themselves pro and demand respect, because we have the honour of playing with them.

People who actually play games professionally and make a living off it, such as testers or tournament players, they're usually regular people. Not fuckheads.
