Oh man I fucking love mastadon!
I have all their albums (Sorry probably should have mentioned them so you didn't waste your time)
Saw them live last year opening for metallica, would have been good but the sound guys put the bass waaaaay to high.
Not a problem, seen them three times in the last year, bloody briliiant! Hell, my username is taken from Leviathan.
Holy shit three times?
Man that'd be awesome to see. All the live videos I've seen the vocals weren't great, how did you find them?
Can't say i noticed a problem, though i've found the lyrics on the earlier albums pretty hard to understand without a lyric sheet anyway. But Crack the Skye live, in order, is one of the best things ever.
I would say it is, that album is a fucking masterpiece, the drum intro to Quintessence, amazing!
And Ghost of Karelia is just beautiful.
All true, gotta love The Last Baron though. It was great when we played it on a bar's dukebox, pretty sure only me and my mate actually appreciated it.

You type "youtube=" and then copy pasta the final part of the link after the equals sign and of course it's all in brackets.

I love Opeth, but I haven't really gotten into many bands like them, so I can't think of many recommendations. I'll edit this later if I do.

There's a big difference between Progressive Metal bands and Alternative Metal bands, at least these days. Alt Metal nowadays is your Slipknot/Disturbed etc etc (pretty much what the old Nu-Metal bands evolved into) and progressive metal is your Dream Theater and your Opeth.

Anyway check Scar Symmetry, they have a lot in common with Dream Theater but still retain some of the death metal edge (sort of like Opeth).
scar symmetry are awesome I highly recommend them too

Devin Townsend's non-SYl stuff is said to be progressive metal, you've got Synchestra, Terria, Accelerated Evolution, Ziltoid The omniscient, Addicted, and Ocean Machine/biomech.

A lot of good suggestions, I was actually going to recommend Ayreon, Scar Symmetry and Symphony X, but I see people have already done that for me - but I noticed some of my other Prog-Metal favorites have not come up. Time to correct that!

Generic Melodeath like scar symmetry doesnt qualife for progressive metal.
Actually Scar Symmetry are anything but generic Melodic Death, in fact they are a huge breath of fresh air in the genre (honestly they might be the future of the very stagnant genre). They are Melodic Death Metal yes, but they bring in huge progressive influences. If you can't hear that by listening to them I don't quite know what to say to you.

For comparison,

Normal Melodic Death:

Scar Symmetry:

But anyway I know they aren't Progressive Metal, they are Melodic Death Metal with large progressive influences. I said they borrowed a lot from Dream Theater while still retaining a Death Metal edge, which is a very good way to describe them. I figured the guy liked Progressive Metal that was still quite brutal and Scar Symmetry was something I thought of, even if they aren't exactly Progressive Metal.

Mastodon has already been suggested, but I'll suggest it again. They're probably my favorite progressive artists. However I know of two other artists you might like:

Baroness
Kylesa

There is also Sonic Syndicate, but I'm almost certain they are not progressive. Still - if you want more ideas, search one of your preferred progressive metal groups on Last.FM and see what the recommended similar artists are like!

I have never really seen why people like Mastadon, I personally think they suck.

Prog on the other hand is god like in my opinion.
I gotta say I also think they're kinda boring compared to other stuff.

There is nothing progressive about progressive metal, it is a moronic title for a genre trying to pretend that it has any form of creatvity involved within it.
