Projects for my break

Righteo, I have about 2 months off starting next week until I'm due back at uni. During this time, I hope to get some stuff done.

1. Write more

Maybe submit to the Escapist if I come up with a good idea, but basically just ask everybody for freelance work (I'm a student journo). There's a bio-tech magazine I might be in with, but that's nothing definite at the moment.

2. Set up a MySpace and Facebook page.

I've never done it, mostly because I never have the time or gumption to update it regularly. I'd like to see what all the fuss is about

Well, that's all I got so far, so members of the Escapist forums, I pose a question to you.

What should I do with my spare time?

I will consider ALL suggestions, even the joke ones.

Spend time on/by the water. be it a Lake, a river, the beach, a creek, skiing, surfing,just laying out in the sun, boating, canoing, kyaking, innertubing, fishing, etc....

Go camping/hiking/rock climbing/biking/white water rafting in the mountains.

Spend time with your girlfriend (or if you don't have one then keep a look out and make a move on a girl you like... it never hurts to try, and even get easier the more times you do it.)

Work. (its the good old fall back.... keeps you busy, interacting with people and puts money in your pocket)

I also like the road trip idea.

Learn a second (or third or whatever) language... while on a road trip!

It's allways handy to have language skills. I have a hope to start learning spanish again in my summer break form uni, or maybe turkish. Especially if your a journo it's handy to know several languages. You don't need to pay a teacher. Find someone over http://www.mylanguageexchange.com/ or get some audiotapes from you library and selfstudy your way to a new language.

Psh J - its not a blog! You should only sign up to social networking for exactly that - the social aspect. You'll find yourself updating it automatically by adding new applications and joining in with new groups (this is why I recommend Facebook moreso) rather than having to force yourself to edit it bi-daily.

yeah facebook is less annoying than myspace

myspace is everything that's wrong with the web and web design basically the phrase ocular diarrhea wouldn't even come close to describing what some myspace pages look like

and i do believe that the escapist has a fan page on facebook too and a zp app as well

You've asked the right man. Jethro Tull are a rock band that emerged in the late 60s. I'm not the best at explaining their type of music (it includes a flute) so here is their wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jethro_Tull_(band)
Probably their greatest claim to fame for the casual music fan would be when they won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album with Crest of a Knave. This was a massive upset: everyone was sure that Metallica's ...And Justice for All would win. Even Tull's agent was so sure Metallica would win that none of the band members were given plane tickets to attend. Alice Cooper had to accept it for them amid boos and jeers. Now I only just bought Crest today and I like it a lot but anyone who suggests it's hard rock or metal should be shot in the face.

I like to think of that award more as a retro-award for their contributions to hard rock. After all, Ian Anderson has written many a well known riff (Aqualung probably the prime example).

That's true, and the foreword on my copy of it said it was more practically "Best group of nice guys who haven't won a grammy before". I can get behind that.

those things happen from time to time, ppl get annoyed but those involved are rather understanding most of the time

That's a good idea. Not only will you get a good amount of sun and exercise, but you could save money on gas by using a bike instead of a car.

only a little one? but you are correct, course i live in a place where the cops don't really care unless they're bored or you're being blatant about it

The cops are not hunting the smokers really in this town. As long as you don't provoke or anything, they tend to leave smokers pretty much alone. Generally people seem relaxed about other people smoking stuff in public places (at least I like to think that)

A very good illustration to this was when I walked around some lakes with some family and friends, in what is a kind of bourgeois area not far from center. It's kind of expensive apartments and luxury food stores, for the upper middle class in the city. You know. Lot's of child carriers and middle class people sitting in cafés and restaurants and stuff. Anyway, I noticed (really hard to miss) 3 young students or something, lying in the grass, obviously smoking a rather large joint. The smell was pretty noticeable, but nobody took notice really. Even mums with their children just walked casually by like it was nothing. This was a rather crowded place with a lot of people relaxing in the son and walking around the lakes with their family. I know we have a liberal policy about hash and such in this country, but this surprised me a little.
