so many people being so petty over the new MGS and other games ... WHY!? when did gamers become this bad
as a PS3 owner i'm happy that my brothers who own 360's can now experience the magic of MGS .. why the hell is everyone putting each other down so hard?? gamers are gamers .. the console wars should be this savage between developers NOT consumers seeking the same thing ... fun
Let me explain:
Last Generation
The PS2 and Xbox were the main contenders in the console industry. Chances were you'd like games on both consoles. The Xbox had more power and a HDD, unlike the PS2, and some really,
really good games, such as Halo and Fable, not to mention XBL and easy set up LAN play. The PS2 on the other hand was technically weaker, but had other great games like Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo 3, Tekken, Shadow of the Collosus etc. It wasn't really possible to say one console was better than the other as they both had a good line up of exclusives, and very little difference in terms of horsepower. They just offered different things, and each had their place. You had the more powerful Xbox console with a few really, really good games, but not many, or the PS2, which had good games, maybe not as great as the Xbox (poor multiplayer), but had a much larger library. It came down to a tricky choice between weighing the pros and cons. And it was a tricky choice.
Current Generation
The 360 came out a year earlier then PS3, with no new/unseen technology in it, making it more of an Xbox 1.5. Still used DVDs, only a tricore processor, and no permanent HDD in all models. The 360 had a year of good times where it was able to visually stun people with good games like Oblivion and Mass Effect. I played on one constantly after it had been released, and it was a right blast. Great for playing next gen games early, as in before any of the other consoles. XBL was fun, but the subscription and accessories were lame and costly.
The PS3 was then released a year after the 360, at a ridiculously high price, boasting a crap load of new technology such as bluray player, easy change HDD, Cell B.E., and everything was inbuilt, such as the wireless and power adapter. So no need to cash out for a wireless adapter or subscription, you got everything in the black behemoth, as well as a hole in your wallet.
Only problem was, the PS3 had next to no games out for it. Motorstorm was nice, but not nearly as nice as the E3 trailer had shown it to be, and Resistance looked like an average next-gen shooter, with no sign of Killzone 2 anywhere. Not a good start, especially since a reason for the high price of the PS3 was that it was filled with good/better tech than the 360. Well, that's like me buying a G295 and having no PC to put it in. So a lot of the owners justified it by saying "I'll give it time, the good games will come out for it, and they should/will be better (technically) than the 360 exclusives, justifying my purchase". Time went by and some exclusives started dribbling out, such as Uncharted and MGS4, but damn, this was over a year since release, and all the console had seen was mainly multiplatform games, which, due to encoding, generally looked worse on the PS3. So unless you were using the PS3 as a bluray player, it was vastly lagging behind the 360s line up consisting of Gears of War, Full Auto, Halo 3, Mass Effect and other titles.
But then late 08/early-mid 09 comes along and starts making things choppy. Sequels such as Resistance 2, LBP, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and Killzone 2 emerge, while a line up suggests more exclusive titles on the way. These games start using the power of the PS3, showing features such as 30 vs 30 lagless battles, good graphics, and overall getting quality review scores. Why does this matter? Because as the same time, the 360 started
loosing titles such as Gears of War & Mass Effect to the PC. Not to mention the format war is now over, and bluray defeated the MS backed HD-DVD, removing the capability of the 360 being used as a next gen media player, considering the PS2 and XBOX were both next-gen movie players (DVD). Plus, the credit crunch is in full swing, f**king over most people, all over the world, meaning that not everyone can afford the luxury of two consoles, or end up having to go with the cheaper console.
Basically, with loads of good exclusives now being released for the PS3, with the 360 loosing exclusive content (Fallout DLC, and talks of GTA:L&D) all the people who bought a PS3 saying that it'd end up 'better' than the 360 are 'right' if you work with critic reviews. Yes, it is subjective, but either way, it's a strong contending point in the console war, mixed with the fact that the PS3 still has the better hardware.
This has basically pissed off
some 360 owners, as some either would prefer a PS3, or realise they should have waited for the PS3 price cut and would have been able to afford it if they had taken into account the price of the accessories for the 360. Some 360 owners will be content with what they have, which is fair as some people will prefer Gears of War to God of War obviously. And some PS3 owners may be pissed that they can't play Gears of War, and so will try to reassure themselves of having made the right purchase. From experience, I've found that the 360 owners I've debated with have not wanted to accept the flaws of the 360, in such a dogmatic way that it screams
they made a mistake with
their purchase and are trying to kid themselves into a false reality. Either way, there is no 'best' console in terms of what games do you like to play, but the tables have been turned, and there seem to be more pros for the PS3 than there are for the 360 at this moment in time, which causes a lot of arguing.
Then we have the Wii. Nintendo have 'secured' the casual market, and sold a ridiculous amount of consoles to this market. I find that both 360 and PS3 owners equally have a distaste for the Wii as it is helping to mess-up, or more pessimistically, destroy, the gaming industry, by getting developers to focus on 'family friendly' games, which to a seasoned gamer would be seen as nothing but crap, due to shoddy graphics and awful AI etc. With so much potential money in this casual market, other companies are trying to get in on it, such as MS Natal and Sony Motion. Natal is more guilty of this, but with the big companies going for the casual market, where does it leave the real gamers?
Family friendly games are not gamer friendly, making the community feel left out, and with just generic crap with a sequel number thrown on to it given out to them. Certainly I've noticed a lack of originality in this generation, as have probably most older gamers. This is a reason why a lot of people
hate the Wii, as it's opened a door which could wank away part of the industry in this economically troubling time.
