PS3 Is "Dying On The Shelves"

The PS3 is not a success. It is a failure.

Business wise, yes. The ps3 has lost sony around $400million. But the 360's RROD fiasco alone cost MS $700 million. Not to mention the fact that its sold at more of a loss than the ps3.
Also the ps3 is beating 360 in the PAL region as well as asia, as a report last month confirmed a higher installed user base for the ps3, 300,000 more than the 360. The only place where the 360 sells more is America, which is hardly surprising, as all the American collage frat-boys want it to play halo

But seriously, it has home advantage there.

Is selling almost 17 million game consoles in only two years a failure? No. Is selling that many while one competitor doubles that amount in the same time frame, or if the other competitor beats you by about 50% despite only haveing a few years of experience in the industry? I would say probably. The PS3 is a good console and has its share consumer support, but sales figures (and profit reports) do not lie. The PS3 is not a success. It is a failure.

This article does over-hype the problems Sony has, but the notion of the PS3's, well, awful market performance is nothing too far from the truth.

If anything should make sony consider a price drop its the success of the wii, low price, more are sold. Though i am seriously wondering how the wii is going to do in the recession with its casual market.

Citation? Where did you hear/read that the Xbox 360 is sold at more of a loss? I believe that it is sold at a loss, but I doubt that the 360 is sold at a bigger loss than the PS3.

Yea i kinda guessed that the 360is sold at "more" of a loss. I thought that because its considerably cheaper, so i figured there must be a larger loss there.However i do know hte original xbox lost MS $1.3 billion, and seeing as the 360 has been around almost as long as the 1st xbox, its cost is probably nearing this with lossed, development costs, them bribing Square to port the basic version of FF13 etc. Combine tht with the $700 million lost from the RROD, thats £2bn right there

truth is i love all my consoles(360,PS3)* except my goddamn wii, arghh!!! why why cant the only good games i like be zelda and mario and metroid! im not gonna lie though, that baby is going to get major playtime when madworld comes out.


*i like alternating, i feel believe it or not, that a different console even if they are similar can give different experiences, example mirrors edge, prefer it on my ps3 though.

While this news is older than my spare set of trainers it's also still unsurprising, the Wii is more accessible for the casual market, which is larger while the Xbox is straight to the point with hardcore titles. Both of them were released much earlier than the PS3 and found thier market niches and filled them easily, and by their standards there is a much higher ratio of good games.

The Wii was released within the same week as the PS3. I am pretty sure it was later in that week too.

Too true. To have a 'well priced' 360, you have to have loads of features removed. Whereas you get everything all in one with a ps3. I guess this has lead to slightly poorer sales because it eliminates buyers on a lower budget, but its a fact that the ps3 is doing better than the 360 this far in. Ps3 is at 18 million sales in 2 years, 360 is at 25million, in 3 years. So to put that in mathematical context, for the 360 to be doing better over all it must have solt at least 1.5 times the ps3. 25 million is only 1.3(ish) times 18 million.

Maybe I got too involving thinking of release dates but my point stands that the Xbox 360 and the Wii targeted more specific markets and found the niche quickly, the Xbox due to the early release date for starters and the Wii due to the strength of the Nintendo brand for example and the appeal to the wider casual market. The PS3 has tried to do too much and with the early backlash before it was even released has caused Sony to trip up over itself.

I'm reminded of what happened to Sega with the Saturn and finally the Dreamcast which finished them as a console manufacturer. I can't help but wonder of Sony is on the same path.

I can't really think of an instance where Sony went for a niche other than hardcore. It's problem is that it is competeing with a cheaper system for said niche.

edit: Well, there is the buzz TV thing, but Microsoft does basically the same thing so I'm pretty sure it balances out.
