Is this the chip that only allows homebrew media? If so, I am dissapointed. However, if it was the chip that allowed pirated games as well, then I understand the measure.
There really isn't any kind that allows one but not the other. The set-up for either is that you can run applications that aren't part of the manufacturer's intended features for the system, so if you can run homebrew stuff, you can get it to run piracy stuff, and if you can get it to run piracy stuff, you can get it to run homebrew stuff. That said, I'm pretty sure this is the one where you just plug the USB device into the PS3 and then pirate the hell out of the console.

And good job to Sony, hopefully they can stop more pirates soon too. I'm so fucking sick of those douchebags, and no I don't care what stupid images or excuses you post, you're nothing but thieves at the end of the day that ruin things for the rest of us. Examples just on Sony stuff include that they won't put trophies on the PSP in part because of pirates and custom firmware doing who knows what to the system, and of course the removal of the Install Other OS feature from old PS3s (granted, Sony did overreact on that, but they wouldn't have had to do anything if people weren't such cheap fucking douchebags).

EDIT: Also on the subject of Australia why do people always say "games are so expensive here, if you paid in another currency it would cost this much." Okay, good for you? You're not buying the games in that currency. Shut up.

Aren't we missing the real story here? The important thing is not that it was made illegal (like that ever stopped ANYTHING) it's that this means the PS3JailBreak is REAL, and not a hoax.

Because pirates care about breaking two laws instead of one?
Because pirates aren't millionaires and piracy is the same as theft which means courts will make offenders pay through the nose. Remember, a rapist will get 2 years in prison, but someone who embezzles money will get 10. Such is the irony of our justice system..

piracy is not theft, its piracy :p
I think the Australian and U.S. Governments would heartily disagree with you. Just because the Canadian Government does agree does not make it any less true.

Also, by that logic, it's counterfeiting, which is still illegal. And the Canadian Government heartily disagrees with that, I assure you.
Counterfeiting is only illegal if you are selling it for your own personal gain. If its for personal use its fine.

So?

This is Australia; a country so mind-bogglingly backwards that they don't even allow 'M' rated games because they think people's brains will explode if offered access to them.
Perhaps you should you know educate your self on things before you go and post absolute BS...

Anyways OT: I don't really see anything wrong with banning mod chips... so yay...

It's nice to see Australia banning a (mostly) pirating technology but I doubt if it will stop anything. Pirates break the law all the time with other activates and don't much care but at least its a black market chip now and Australia sent a firm message.
Its stopped nothing. If someone wants it they can still get it. I wouldn't be surprised if the army ended up hiring one of these tech-wiz's to sort out there problems with sony.

Oh come on, Australia tends to mess around with gamers. Its common knowledge.

You know perfectly well that piracy doesn't refer to people making copy's for personal use. Piracy is people downloading things they haven't brought.

Yeah sure people do make copy's for personal use, but that's not what people mean when they scream "YOU SNEAKY PIRATE" at someone.

I did mention that people would still get it on the black market. The point is that I support the fact that Australia came out and said "No, we're not putting up with this bullshit" and banned the thing.

Yup, you did. But you also said they sent a firm message. Which they didn't, more will get made, always happens. They'll just make them somewhere where it'll be easier to argue in court.

Oh, wow. Seriously, who the fuck would pirate console games?
Undeservedly self-intitled short-sighted twats who think the fruits of someone else's labors should be theirs without cost, and who figure it's all fine since nothing bad can happen to them, and that it's the game industry's fault since 'games cost too much'.

OT, good. Hope the suit works in the US too. Ban 'em, take 'em, break 'em, but only after you use a few to find out HOW it is being done... and make it so it can't be used that way with PS3s here-after.

Of course but a frigging law directly saying "This shit will not fly in Australia" is a firm message. It can be ignored or subverted but nobody is going to deny flat out making a law saying "no" is an obvious indicator of firm conviction. Some continues may be wishy washy and kind of straddle the fence not doing anything and not making a firm stance but, on this issue, Australia just flat out layed down the ban. Of course the company who makes the mod chip will ignore it since its in their interest to keep making the thing but the message was still still sent out to the world clearly, Australia has a very definite opinion on this issue, "We frown on your Bullshit modchipers, gtfo!" and I support their quick and decisive move against this modchip. End of Conversation.

I suppose. Its just my definition of firm message is slightly different than yours. In that I only consider it to be firm if people care
