OK, so I've acquired a PS3. It's in the living room awaiting hookup as I type. No games as of yet: I was going to pick up one or two on the way home from work tonight. I wanted to get opinions on what games I should buy and what I should rent. I searched the forums here, and the most recent thread was almost 2 months old, so maybe some new games have come out?

I know about LBP and Uncharted. I'm not a fan of the MGS series. Generally, I'll play anything, but I tend to like games with good graphics (I paid all that money for a 1080p TV after all) and good stories, it really doesn't matter as to the genre, although JRPGs have to work a lot harder to hold my attention for some reason.

So... if you're going to the store and you can buy 5 games, tell me which five you get, and (more importantly) why.

Resistance 1&2? Killzone 2? Ratchet and Clank? *shrug* I barely play my PS3, I only really got it for MGS4 and since you don't want to have anything to do with it...I can't help you. My friend says Heavenly Sword is sick...maybe try that out?

For graphics, Fallout 3 is sheer beauty. It's an immersive one as well.
Maybe Call of Duty 4, and World at War as well (but I'm an FPS nut).
Saint's Row 2 comes highly recommended by me as well.

If youve heard the game in a good light, then it should be pretty decent. (as with anything)

If its a game that has never even crossed your mind then do avoid it. they are normally rubbish.

5 games? Ok:

MGS= Amazing all around

LBP= Very creative game and original as hell. I have hardly ever laughed as much playing a game, great for local co-op which is har to find these days.

R+C= Great gameplay, one of the last bastion of plattformers out there worth a shit. It's way too easy though..

Killzone 2= Great graphics, intense as hell. Not exactly my type of game but you should get it just for the visual experience, online is really great too.

SF IV: Yeah this is multi-platform, it still kicks ass though

I'd say Uncharted is just a rental: Check it out, it's pretty decent but you'll get through in around 8 hours, no real reason to replay after that.

You should definetly get Flower from the PSN, awesome, awesome game. Also try Super Stardust HD.

Soul Calibur IV: Great combat, customizable characters,

Ratchet & Clank Future: TOD: a fun game all around, humorous cutscenes,

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: Pretty cheap now, people still play it today online, deep story,

Will add more later...

The new Chronicles of Riddick is very good, I would suggest that first. Really draws you in.
Saints Row 2/GTA IV are great time killers, and def worth a look at.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, nothings more fun then throwing around storm troopers.
Ratchet and Clank is also quite fun, worth a look.

If you want a sandbox game with a lot of fun Saints Row 2. GTA 4 is another choice but be prepared to spend a few hours to get into it and its a lot less mindless shooting fun.

If you like Driving then Burnout Paradise would be worth a go, espesally since i don't really go for driving games but i liked this one, the crash scenes are great.

Other games i'd advise to rent before you buy would be The Darkness, Conan and Uncharted.

I would say LittleBigPlanet as you have already mentioned, as well as Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box, Killzone 2, Resistance 1 and/or 2, and Fallout 3.

If you like a good story and a rpg/rts style gameplay Valkyria Chronicles is amazing. great story really interesting graphical style, replayability if you like to try and get A rankings all kinds of fun.

Ratchet and Clank is another great game.

Chronicles of Riddick is alot of fun too.(multiplat)

Loved Uncharted.

LBP is alot of fun.

I'd recommend checking out the PlayStation Network for downloadable indie games. PixelJunk Eden, flOw, Flower and Everyday Shooter are all recent favorites. I've also heard Warhawk is a pretty solid downloadable title, but I haven't spent much time with it myself.

First off I must say that you have tons of free demos on PSN: take advantage of that.

Warhawk; if you have a ps3, you may as well have warhawk.

Saints Row 2: like GTA but more absurd and fun.

Street Figher 4: If you want to have a fighting game (and you remember SF2 fondly) you'll dig it.

Valkyria Chronicals: A SRPG unlike any other. I notice you don't dig the anime style too much but this is just plain gorgeous. But try the demo first.

For the price of one new game you can get a bunch of smaller but just as much fun titles off PSN: Echocrome, The Last Guy, and anything Pixel Junk. There's demos for all of those, so try them out first.

So, the word of the day is Demos.
