Ive been planning on getting a ps3 for a long time now and I noticed that there are several types of ps3. What I mean by types is that there are 40gb 60gb 80gb ect. my question is how much space does an average ps3 game take up?

Usually a game takes 4GB of space when first installed. Additional content means more space.

However, you have to keep in mind that not all PS3 games require installation (a common misconception). Games such as Condemned: Bloodshot simply play from the disc.

Also, do memory cards play any role in how much space a game takes up?

I don't understand the question.

The PS3 doesn't have memory cards for it. It has a built in PS1 and PS2 memory card creator so you can play PS1 and PS2 games on it (if your PS3 has backwards compatability... I think all PS3's play PS1 games, unsure). All saved game data is stored on a hard drive and, generally, the save game files are small.

To put it like this, I have a 40GB PS3 and I have 20GB left to fit. I have about 20-30 demos, own 8 games, have about 9 full PSN games, and I have various videos and music stored on it as well.

Edit: I'd also like to add to the above that I've rented about 10-15 PS3 games as well, some with installs some without. I don't know exactly how many have or don't have installs.

I also forgot to mention the 200-300MB patches for the games that sometime creep up.

No memory cards, that's what the HD is for. You can always put in a bigger HD yourself, so the best idea is to score an older PS3 (for backwards compatability) and just swap out the drive if you really think you'll run out of space.

Ok, I see now, thanks. I just thought it would have memory cards like the ps2.

You can use the PS2 and PS1 memory cards if you have an adapter. Be warned that not all models can play PS2 games. Oh and if you're worried about buying a 40gb and running out of room, you can switch out the hard drive for a bigger one pretty cheap (they use 2.5 laptop drives).

The memory isn't really a problem with the PS3 since it can use a large assortment of other, cheap hard-drives as a replacement.

I have a 60 gig one and have around 15 games or so with 5 demos and 8 other PSN titles and I'm not even close to filling it. I think the only game that takes up quite some space is MGS4, but I'm not even sure how much.

They're all the same apart from the 60gb,(can play ps/ps2 games, memory sticks slots, chrome plastic). They stopped selling the 60gig now, in the UK anyway.
80gig is more then enough if your not going to use it as a media center and download loads of demos, and it's very easy to upgrade the HDD if you ever need more space.

The adapters? Yeah I'm sure you can find them online, not so sure about Best Buy though. I haven't been there in a while so I couldn't tell you. If you were referring to the hard drives, http://www.gamespot.com/features/6176090/index.html that should help you quite a bit

Actually I think it's the 40GB, the 60gb, and a few versions of the 80gb that are backwards compatible. I'm not sure if the 80gb versions (the motorstorm bundles) ever went to the UK.

I think it's different in the US for what type get the ps2 compatibility, US get the emotion engine while UK get a crap emulator. I'm 100% sure that the UK is 60gig for the "good ps3" that you cannot buy any more.
and also you do not really need to upgrade your hdd if you have a fast internet connection, you can stream your videos, musics, etc from your pc as well just like the 360.

You don't need an internet connection, just a lan controller.

oh right, I don't know much about network, all I know is when I connect my consoles wirelessly it doesn's stream fast if my internet is slow.

That alone can't be true, since "your internet" is an external network, and the one with the consoles it's an internal network. Of course it would slow down if you saturated the wi-fi network, and/or if you had a poor wireless access point and many connected peripherals.
