Win for Sony? Even though they are money grabbing, if you ask me.

Well it was bigger that the 1st XBox and weighed 15 pounds so it wasn't light or small.apsham said:And then on the other hand; yeah I doubt anyone has bought it due to this. It's the price cut, pure and simple. No one wants the friggin' thing just because it's slim, the original system wasn't MASSIVE in the first place.RossyB said:I'd be surprised if it lasts. I'd be even more surpirsed that Sony fans are so shallow that they think:
OH MY GOD IT'S THIN! IT ROCKS I'M GOING TO BUY ONE! NO FAT CHICKS LOLOLOL!!!!1!
although that's the feeling I get from these sales figures
(no offence to Sony fans by the way)
you are aware bill gates hasnt beein head of microsoft since June 27, 2008...owned, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gatesteisjm said:Sony cuts price = they loose even more money on each ps3 sold.
Bill gates knows this, and went to buy as many PS3s as possible, not only to make sony loose money, cause sony makes money from games and stuff, not the console so if Bill buys them, and burns them, there ain't gonna be made money off of them, he bought everythiing the stores had so normal people couldn't get them.
I'm pretty sure this is what happened, i read it in the intestines of the rat i found in my happy meal.
Everyones buying and selling at a loss on everything we do if you consider the economic situation, I consider most of these arguments moot off the bat.Ghost8585 said:The cost or production goes down over time, negating your argument. Sony is still selling at a loss, but not at a greater loss then before. Microsoft is selling at a loss as well.teisjm said:Sony cuts price = they loose even more money on each ps3 sold.

No longer true. Sony was able to hack costs by 70% [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93576-Sony-Has-Cut-PS3-Production-Costs-By-70-Percent] so now the PS3 only costs $242.10. By my (and this news stories figures) the PS3 actually sells for a slight profit now.Clyde said:Last I read, the PS3 costs $840 to produce. I haven't been able to find a solid cost per unit figure for the slim. I saw ranges from a slight profit to a $100 loss.
thats actually not entirely true. when it first came out the cost was over $800 to produce each unit. but as far back as a year ago sony was actually breaking even on each ps3 (back then it cost about $400 to make, and selling at $400-500 would be breaking even to making $100 on each console sold. with the slim though the cost is estimated to be $240 or $280 (pretty sure its $240 though) to produce, so right now at $300 a pop sony is actually MAKING money on each system sold.tsolless said:Well that's because they were already selling at a loss so dropping the price for the console will result in the them losing even more money that would be harder to cover with by selling games.jebussaves88 said:I'm glad, because this will show Sony just how foolish it was to stick at that price. I'm willing to bet they'd be doing a lot better if this happened a year ago.
Now that they have streamlined the PS3 they can make it for a lower cost to themselves and thus sell it for cheaper.
as people have said, this is week to week sales, not month to month, year to year, or lifetime sales. if you actually look at the 2 weeks prior to the slims launch ps3 sales tanked big time. this 999% increase is over the previous week. so for example, lets say sony sold 100 units the previous week (this is to keep the numbers and explanation simple), well a 999% increase would mean that sony then sold 999 units the next week (a 100% increase=2x, a 200% increase=3x, a 0% increase is the same as 1x just to clairify since some people seem to think that a 200% increase is equal to 2x). if sony sold 1000 units then the next week they would sell 9999, if 10,000 then 99,999. since sony doesent release sales numbers we dont know how many were sold that week and the previous week, but its just a week to week thing, so it is plausiable.Woodsey said:999% ?
Right, because no number fiddling has gone on there...
Even if the new slim dropped in price to £150 I doubt the sales would go up that high.
Most comments from the public I have seen about the price drop have said it still isn't enough and they still won't be buying one.

Yeah I understand the maths, but it does sound suspicious, I mean 999% ? I know it's just as likely as getting any other number, but still... something just sounds wrong in my mind. And the number of units sold (I don't know how many) would be (I assume) in the 10's of thousands? So a 999% increase on that, is a big bloody increase.as people have said, this is week to week sales, not month to month, year to year, or lifetime sales. if you actually look at the 2 weeks prior to the slims launch ps3 sales tanked big time. this 999% increase is over the previous week. so for example, lets say sony sold 100 units the previous week (this is to keep the numbers and explanation simple), well a 999% increase would mean that sony then sold 999 units the next week (a 100% increase=2x, a 200% increase=3x, a 0% increase is the same as 1x just to clairify since some people seem to think that a 200% increase is equal to 2x). if sony sold 1000 units then the next week they would sell 9999, if 10,000 then 99,999. since sony doesent release sales numbers we dont know how many were sold that week and the previous week, but its just a week to week thing, so it is plausiable.

360: threw systems out as fast as they could.
Wii: slow IV fluid drip technique, basically kept the system desirable by making it some what exclusive.
PS3: Didn't have much to begin with, now they do and people want that.

OT:That is suprising, however it could be like Killerbunny said. This could be a case of misinterpreting statistics, you can alter a graph to make it look like someone has far more popularity than someone else by skewing the distance. Numbers would be better than percents to accuratley gauge the data.
i had the same thoughtThe_Deleted said:I thought it was the game sales that were up so high. Seems a huge jump for a console.
Well yes and no. The price was a definite negative when it came to buying a PS3, but the bigger issue was what games it had. Which, at the time, where few and far between and while most of the games, while still being exclusive, where not all that appealing or different from what was coming out for the 360.apsham said:That is way off key though. The 360 produced their proper amount of consoles and priced them in ways that people could afford; not to mention showcasing what people wanted to buy. The Wii was amazingly popular and sold quickly, although yes.. Nintendo's marketing strategy has been to make the damn thing elusive. Anyone who WANTED to buy a PS3 but didn't want to spend a fortune on it.. they've been waiting for a price drop dammit. The software is the same as it was a few weeks ago, it's just more viable now financially.blood77 said:Well that really isn't a big surprise.

It is over 999%. Sony's system cannot go above that. According to Gamasutra, sales actually increased 11x. I guess it's believable if you consider how poorly the PS3 had been performing up until now.Woodsey said:Woodsey said:999% ?

And like I said, in my encounters I've seen/heard next to no one say this would make them buy one. Then again, I've hardly experienced all console owners so I'm obviously not going to have a definite say.
It just doesn't ring true to me I'm afraid. I'm glad for them that sales are up, but I really don't believe it's that much.
