For the most part I'd say that it's people (usually of a younger age) with a limited budget who can only have a single console. They usually feel like they need to justify their decision by saying that the competition is inferior. Problem is that once you factor in internet shenanigans it gets to near zealot levels of dedication that is more sad than anything else. The good thing though is that competition breeds quality so it's not all bad.

There are others that just plain prefer a console over another but generally they don't hate the competition. Those that do usually have so many reasons (both legitimate and not) to hate the competition that it's pointless trying to figure them out.

PS3:
+More exclusives
Not technically true.

Notice that many of the titles listed as Xbox 360 Exclusives are titles that are also on PC, but the Xbox 360 is the only console they are on. Those don't really count, in my opinion.
I think he meant AAA exclusives, quality over quantity.
Not what I meant. If you count only console exclusives Xbox 360 still clearly has more. I just counted them and PS3 has 49 listed and 360 has more than that.

And even those that are only console exclusive like Cave games still have extra arrange modes for 360 so they still clearly count somewhat.

People like to fight. Look at war, religions, and reality tv. At least no one has been beaten to death over the console war...yet.
people have been beaten to death and severely maimed over other video games related bits though unfortunately. I heard about this story where some people were gaming and one of em got so pissed he put a knife through one of the other guy's head. ow...

This last console generation hasn't really thrilled me much. I can count on one hand how many titles I've played that were actually worth the hype. Compared to how many have just kept circling the drain of marketable cliche's and sequels.

Though a few examples of innovation poke their head out here or there, they never generate enough revenue to warrant exploring further. So instead, we go back to that holding pattern of cliche'.

I was hoping that after extending the current generation's lifespan (PS3 and 360) we would start seeing more innovation, or at least a few more titles off the beaten path (like we did in the last generation), but in fact, the opposite has occurred.

So really. I don't "get" the "Console Wars" anymore.

I just dont get it.
It's actually very simple and very prevalent.
The thing is that gaming is more expensive now and some people will always put down the competition of what they bought because they want to feel better about the choice they made.
I on the other hand, have no problems saying that I sometimes feel foolish for buying a ps3 as I see it continue to lose features and get the worst version of multiplatform games.
The reason the console wars are so big now is that there are no really good choices between consoles. You have a choice between a childrens toy, a well built console with terrible support, and a terribly built console with good support. So everyone who bought a console looks a little foolish.
We should at least be honest with ourselves right?
In fact (in my opinion) the really smart console people are still playing the ps2.
