A terabyte of hard drive space for a console. Whatever next...?
Saves with lots more variables (just think about sandbox games in which the world gets randomly generated when you start a new game and evolves while playing), meaning bigger save files.
I don't think so actually. If you look at the increase in the size of games when you install them(the minimum now must be about 8GB, with many 10 or over) over the years compared to the increase in size of save files, it's barely noticeable. For TFU it's still only 320kb needed for a save.

Of course TFU isn't comparable to a forever randomised sand box, but then again a save won't be the thing that controls what is randomised. A save surely just 'remembers' data, it doesn't alter it or have anything change in the process of the data being saved.

Saves will never be that much of a problem in my opinion, even if my entire last paragraph was wrong (I'm not an expert on saves, sorry guys) from what you can see today, with games being up 25GB in size (GTA IV) and saves still being in the kb section, there's nothing to worry about. And certainly no need for that terabyte hard drive on the next Playstation or Xbox.
How many of these small save games have to put all the variable which make up a randomly generated planet-sized (or in a later state galaxy-sized) sandbox maps, with possibly over 10 billion A.I. controlled NPCs in their save files?(None right now I think, due to processors still being unable to handle 10 billion complex A.I. threads at the same time fast enough.)

I think the PS4 will be the size of a small car and will stomp about scary small children and destroying Tokyo.

I kid, I kid. It will be some time before the PS4 comes out and I have idea what technology will be like a few years from now, So i can't say.

ps3 still has quite a bit of life left in it. Most developers can't even fully utilize its capabilities yet.

And why the hell would a console need a terabyte of space? Not even PC users can easily fill that much.
Yeah you should see my gaming computer...

O.T. I think its a little early to start thinking of the PS4, isnt it supposed to come out in like 2014 or something.

I have nearly 4 TB of space used up out a total of 7 at my house. It is not going to be long before more people are downloading then anything else. Already speeds, at least with the connection I have, are to the point that I can download a standard definition full length movie in about 5 min. I can actually download and watch full length 1080p movies easily. At 4GB+ for those compressed, and games bordering on 10+GB the drives start to fill up pretty quickly.

For consoles the demand for larger and larger games on the services has lead to upload caps being either removed or set at marks that exceed game sizes of many last generation titles. Next gen will probably find a 500GB to small to last longer then a year or so of regular use.

It seems a bit early to be speculating about the next PlayStation, isn't it? Especially as it is really starting to kick ass with their new game releases (see Uncharted 2, God of War 3 (maybe)) I think there are some more, but I can't remember them.

My brother's and I have filmed a half-terrabyte. Our PS3 is a media center, not just gaming.
See.

Though I noticed it is called a "media center" instead of "porn emporium" ;).

Of course. An important distinction to make, in order to prevent social awkwardness.

Very true. But I still think that Sony has to beat MS in putting out PS4 before the next Xbox if it wants to climb out of the basement of the console race. They say that PS3 has a 10 year lifespan, which it probably will, but I suspect that PS4 will arrive 2011~2012, which gives PS3 a similar life story as the PS2 (minus the sales).

For features, I think that it keeps the Blueray, with a similar option to upgrade the hard drive (it comes with a relatively small one, say...250 GB), 1~2GB RAM, maybe up to 14 core CPU, and an upgraded version of the graphics card. Though I'm not exactly sure that this is the best thing to do, since a lot of devs are saying that the PS3 structure is hard to program for.

As for MS and Wii, their futures seem much more murky. MS stated that Natal can push their console to 2015, which is something I have difficulty imagining. X360 is a machine that struggles a bit to run some big budget games that started developing 2~3 years ago, how is it going to be able to handle, say, FF15 when it has maxed out handling FF13? I still think that MS will have a new console out by 2013 latest, but X360 will be hard pressed to make it to 2015 in one piece. For Nintendo, they probably can't reproduce their magic of 2006. The Wii (I think) is like catching lightning in a bottle, and they probably won't be able to pull it off again. Also, I have a hard time seeing the majority of the casual market moving onto the next generation console. They have very little reason to upgrade from the Wii, as it already fulfills their gaming needs.

If you play Final Fantasy, you will need 7 terabytes.

Seriously, someone get the Penny Arcade thing.

Oh please. Generic PC components are already at the 1.5 terrabyte mark, and that capacity isn't even expensive.

More to the point, I have a video camera, and used up 40GB of space in next to no time flat.

I have a total of about 800 GB of hard disc capacity, and about 50 GB free space, so it's really not that hard.

If you factor in actual data, my DVD collection in and of itself comes close to 2 Terrabytes.

Most people already own terrabytes worth of data, but in terms of the need for that capacity on a hard drive...

I have about 220 Gigabytes on the main drive in my PC. (the rest is external storage). about
30 GB is from by video camera (it's not even High definition).
5 GB of photos from a digital camera.
20 GB of items downloaded from the internet (largest being several linux distros, and various programming things like the Windows & DirectX SDK's.)
47 GB is game installation files... Hmm...

Yep. the single largest chunk of my PC's capacity is games...
That says it all really. The above 5 types of data are about half the total capacity.

I have a 1TB hard drive on my PC and your right its just unfillable (I don't think that's a word...).
Anyway wake up, the PS3 needs to revert to graphics card heavy than CPU heavy or else people will just be tired of developing for it like valve are.
I'm not saying it's a bad system just it is apparently a very difficult system to work with.
Besides do you know how much that would cost it would be more than most homemade gaming rigs.

The next generation of consoles will most probably sell their games on demand, so it would more or less all be digital downloads.
50GB+ games at 6Mbps? (US average, 2009) If that happens, digital distribution will fail.

Even if Sony somehow beats Microsoft in the console wars Microsoft can still fall back on their PC sales. I say that Nintendo and Sony should start making PCs of their own. They could be really good at making PCs if they wanted too.

I love the PS3 as a highly reliable gaming console. Sure, it's far behind on the other consoles and it costs a shit-load to buy as well as the games, but console gaming is rather unique in it's own way. I do believe however that PC Gaming will start to go further than a console ever could mainly because as Yahtzee said himself we're coming to the point where we're getting graphics as almost realistic as possible granted if you actually have the kind of computer that can run Crysis at 60FPS that will most likely last you years until Crysis 2 comes out with another set of astronomically stupid graphic requirements. In the end, console gaming night eventually die out when realism comes to the point that holodecks actually become a reality and not just a sci-fi geeks dream.

by the time it comes out it will be using SATA 3, USB 3.0 and Quad HD (2160p)

possibly Holographic Versatile Discs for games but this is quite unlikely as they have theoretical storage capacity of 6TB and thats a bit excessive even for games with such high resolution

EDIT: There was a point in time when my Dad's work got new computers. Their first with 1 whole megabyte of RAM. The computer buffs were convinced there was no way you could ever need that much RAM in any practical situation. My dad is 45 so that wasn't too long ago. Never say never when it comes to system specs. They will keep improving
