It wholely depends on what kind of games you prefer, though I personally lean more towards the PSP as my DS rarely ever gets playtime (aside from GTA:China Town wars playing).

If you get a DS, please please PLEASE for the love of GOD GET ELITE BEAT AGENTS

If you get a PSP, please please PLEASE for the love of GOD GET PATAPON 2

I'm heading to England in a month, and will be staying there for a while. To prepare for the long flight, I already have several movies and hours upon hours of songs on my iPod, my Rubik's Cubes, and, soon to be, a butterfly pen to keep me occupied while I'm there.

However, when I check my Gameboy SP I find out it's busted. Since I'm done school my dad offered to get me either a DS or a PSP to replace it.

My question now is which I should go for? This is mainly a question as to which has better games. I hear that Chinatown Wars is decent for the DS, I am already a fan of the Pokemon series, and have a few Gameboy Advance games so those are the pros for me getting a DS. On the other hand, the PSP seems to be more powerful and has a few games that peak my interest also, namely the GTA and Battlefront games.

So I am torn between which to buy, and so I ask the Escapist for some feedback on these systems.

Oh, and what type of audio file does a PSP take? Will it run songs I bought off of iTunes?
The DS system, while large and clunky, has a LOT of good games, especially in comparison to the rather limited library the PSP holds. The PSP's "movie" library is limited, and the movies are very hard to find, and tend to be rather expensive.

If you do decide to get a DS, here are a few games I would recommend;

Trauma Center: Under the Knife (Both 1 and 2)
WarioWare: Touched!
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Hurray for subtitles!

Alright, after seeing the responses, I think I'm going to get a DS.

Now aside from Pokemon, GTA China Town Wars, and now Elite Beat Agents, what other good games are out for the DS?

I say DSi. The internet is very helpful because it's not like you're going to always be around a computer. The thing can download music, take and warp picture, record and warp voices and sounds, can download some games that utilize the camera. You can make a good hour of playing with just the DSi at first, and possibly more when you find really good pictures to warp. Yes it doesn't allow GBA games, but that's a small drawback.

As for games, I suggest:
Pokemon Platinum (Of course)
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Metroid Prime Hunters
Kirby Canvas Curse
Action Replay (I really suggest this one. It can make any DS game last waaaaay longer)

EDIT: Also might be a good idea to get Line Rider for DS. That's insanely fun.

Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 64 DS
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

If you like RPGs there's an amazing selection (far better than the current generation of consoles):
Final Fantasy 3, 4, and Tactics A2
Chrono Trigger
Disgaea DS
Knights in the Nightmare
Lunar Knights
The World Ends With You
Pokemon
Etrian Odyssey II
Golden Sun DS (coming soon)
Dragon Quest IV, V, and soon, IX

PSP.
I like watching movies. And it has Battlefront.

On the other hand...

The DS does have an excellent selection of games.

It all depends on what your going to do with your handheld mostly. PSP is the more media friendly selection with a smaller selection of good games, whereas the DS is the better gaming platform. I'd say PSP just for the sake of Battlefront, but that's just me.

If you want games, DS.

If you want an MP4 player... get an MP4 player.

If you like having 1-2 games and barely playing them, find a friend with PSP, watch it, and then thank yourself for not buying it.

If you go for a DS, and you should, then get a DS lite. You can import games which the new DSi won't let you do.

Well...it's more towards your gaming style, really. Personally, I prefer the offerings from the PsP compared to Nintendo's library, but that's just me. The main offerings from Nintendo, however, are largely based around the target audience for the DS, i.e.: Little kids.
And this is where I stopped reading. Seriously, in the days of Viva Pinata and Little Big Planet, I think we can get over the "Nintendo = Kiddy" stereotype.

Anywho, as for the OP, if you're already a fan of the Pokemon series, then go with the DS. It has just as many (if not more) good games compared to the PSP. On top of that, it's cheaper, and while it lacks some of the features that the PSP has, your iPod that you mentioned probably covers those bases anyway.

Some people might argue that every game on the DS is "too gimmicky" by forcing the stylus. Well, after I'd owned my original DS for a year or two, I was relieved when I finally bought a game that DID make heavy use of the stylus. So honestly, the "gimmicky stylus" thing is more propaganda than fact, likely created by Sony fanboys. There are just as many games that use almost exclusively the D-Pad + Buttons as ones that make heavy use of the stylus.

i got a ds first (i do plan on getting a PSP... later...)

but i got a DSi and i love it (granted it was my birthday and game stop gave me $70 for my DS Lite)
but i also NEVER used my Gameboy slot, i got a Gameboy Advanced SP because remember when the DS didn't play Gameboy games
you can get a GBASP for pretty cheap now can't you? and that plays Gameboy games
i wouldn't be surprised if they put old game boy games up for download on the DSi though
if you are buying the system for the first time i recommend the DSi the stylus is noticeably bigger and that is nice, plus the bigger screen and the soft reset is awesome, the camera isn't bad either

The DS is better in every way. The battery life is longer, there are more and better games for it, it's sturdier, and it's cheaper.

I enjoy PSPs. They're fun. But, on the other hand, I don't own one and do own a DS. On top of that, I can name more games for the DS that I enjoy than I could for the PSP.

All about taste, really.

Just some more games that haven't been mentioned yet.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village - A clever puzzle game that is charming as well that difficult.

Castlevenia - There are 3 Castlevenia on the DS. Difficult yet fun.

DS has a lot of good games and some long lasting games, but PSP has Monster Hunter Freedom, so it instantly gets my vote.

i'm a big time playstaion fan.. and a long time nintendo fan. i have both and i love both. for a long trip like that.. i would go with the PSP. movies, music, web browser, and yes, those great GTA games. u can find some great psp games for a cheap price nowadays. but i choose it mostly for the playstation store. you can just buy movies or tv shows, even games and free demos srt8 from the psp itself, which is great if u dont want to worry about foreign money!!!
