It is entirely possible that it was a set up. These "psychics" often have shills whose purpose is to entice customers. In fact, you yourself might be one such shill.
You've given me no evidence that would convince me that this woman had any powers. And if she did, would she really be working as a carnival/fair medium charging 5 bucks a pop for a reading? I don't think so.
Claims of psychic power also go against everything we know about the brain. We know that thoughts are just the chemical/electrical interactions between millions of neurons, and we know that memories are stored in these neurons. How would a psychic be able to access this? What mechanic are they using? If they really do have such power, then why haven't they predicted disasters or financial upheavals? If this power is real, why don't more people use it?
I'm sorry, but a sketchy forum post revolving around an anecdotal experience with no hard proof is not very convincing. Every single psychic claim I have encountered has either proven to be fake, a set up or has no proof backing it up. I'm a sceptic, and I will continue to be one, as that makes the most logical sense. Simply put, you need HARD EVIDENCE that this phenomenon exists - it must be verified by multiple impartial judges, it must have a working theory explaining how it might work, and it just.... it just has to be demonstrated. They claim they have this power, yet they only practice it in shady tents at fairs. They claim they can see so much, yet all their "predictions" are vague and can be twisted to fit just about anything. They claim to be so powerful, yet they have so little impact on anything.
It just doesn't add up.
Science has created all the technology around you. It has unlocked the secrets of the stars themselves, the process of nuclear fusion. Using nothing, NOTHING but hard work, logic, mathematics and experimentation, it has created satellites, microwaves, vaccines, genetically modified organisms, air-planes, the internet and, indeed, video games. Recently the scientists at CERN have semi-stably trapped anti-matter for the first time.
Science doesn't know everything - that's why it's still going on. If science thought it knew everything, it would stop! But there is one thing I do know - Science is a far more powerful method for finding out reality than anything else. When stacked up against science, supernatural, spiritualist claims just can't measure up in terms of power or relevance or insight. Science explains so much - how stars work, how DNA works, how organisms grow, how chemical compounds form, how electricity works, how atoms interact and how even light itself works. What have "supernaturalists" or "psychics" achieved in contrast? Basically nothing. Still the same barely believable nonsense they've been touting for centuries.
I find it hard to believe that people will continue to hang on to absurd, outdated models of how the world works. Science is ever-expanding, and is continuously improving and growing more powerful by the day. The old, silly paradigms will just fade away.
Let me put this question to you - say you've been bitten by a rabid dog. Are you going to run off to a witch or herbalist so they can sprinkle a few leaves on you while you slowly succumb to the disease, or are you going to be sensible and go the nearest hospital and get a rabies vaccine? Be honest.
Or how about another question - why is it that life expectancies and sanitation is highest in countries that practice western medicine, and LOWEST in countries that DON'T?! Why is it that polio and small pox disappeared only when science created the necessary vaccines? Seems that the herbal "medicines" weren't able to do the job!
Science is more powerful than the old ways of thinking. Science works. It does. I have manipulated DNA in a lab. I have sequenced it, cloned it, inserted it, and cut it with restriction endonucleases. Unlike the mumbo jumbo of "Spiritualism" and "alternative medicine", I have PROOF that my science works and that the things I talk about exist. I have seen DNA. I have held a eppendorf tube of plasmids in my hand. That is proof, that is power.
What do the other "alternatives" to science have? Mere words and rituals. They can't and haven't produced anything, and they never will.
