Something Awful makes a fortune just by charging people to use an internet forum. Then again Something Awful quickly became the second greatest cess pitt on the internet second only to it's own horrific offspring.

I'll be watching this closely, if there's enough content and features to warrant my dolleros then great. If not then that's okay too. At least the option is there for people who want HD videos and whatnot.

That being said, it's totally bogus that my awesome custom titled, paid for with about 20 minutes of sweat, sweat and sweat is being made redundant by dudes paying $20bucks to call themselves "AWESOMEASAURUS"
I should get a glittery title or something. Something to help ease the pain.

I would do this if I had the cash, but being a university student, I don't.

The only thing that irks me about not being able to do this (aside from seeing all the awesome titles people are making for themselves) is the thing about a private area of the forum for members only.

Feels like I'm being segregated from the community for being poor.

At first i was very dismissive, thinking it was another good site gone bad by offering 'Premium' content but after reading through this, the prospect of all those benefits for less than £10 for the year is actually quite enticing.

That said, ad-free browsing - not exactly difficult when you have ABP installed :p

Now to think of a title...

Well, typically I just hang in the background and let the more outgoing sorts grab the glory, but heck... it's the Escapist. I suppose I can pony up.

[small]Do you see what I did there? "Pony" up? Eh? Eh? Come on, people, work with me here. Is this thing on?[/small]

So how do I set this custom title?

I signed up, not for the benefits because they look rather blah tbh, but to support the escapist, $11AUD is pretty cheap for a year, and hey, you guys do good work, don't care for all the articles or video series (personally can't stand the new porn star thing) you have, but you who say they love every aspect of any publication, but on the whole, it's a great site, and well worth supporting.

Hmmm, very interesting, I am tempted to get this though I'm cheap as hell. I'll definitely consider subscribing to this, but I'm really just content with the way things are now.

Though that badge sure does look shiny....

Understood, thanks Matt! Let's see how this whole shtick works out.. Hopefully better than my last experience with this sort of thing.. Just.. Escapist Staff, don't start acting like super-celebrities, ignoring people who AREN'T Publisher's Club members. Benefits are benefits, but don't treat anyone who happened to not subscribe like shit. That should be the same to PC members too. Common courtesy, kthx?
I find it hard to believe that anyone who's been around this site, and has seen the staff interact with the community, would even be asking such a question. We interact with y'all now, when you aren't paying us a dime. What, we're suddenly going to stop that because some folks pony up $20 and some don't?

Lemme tell you who I ignore: Jerks. The willfully ignorant. People who are cruel for the sake of alleviating a few seconds' worth of boredom. Asshats. And people who watch Jersey Shore.

Sorry, but I just can't abide that show.

Point is, while I certainly hope people choose to support The Escapist so that we can keep the lights on, that's not going to be a determining factor in how I treat someone. People have plenty of perfectly valid reasons for not joining the Pub Club, and if I didn't respect that, then I'd be the jerk.

Question:

Just for clarification, will we be able to still watch videos on the site at a lower quality if we don't sign up for the Publisher's Club?

And are you planning on increasing the number of ads on the site in the near future?

Unfortunately guys, When i saw the PM a little part of me Died, and ive strongly considered jumping ship before things turn nasty. When i first read the PM i thought "They're going to charge for forums now...", but then i read on.

Im tempted to leave, The only thing that is stopping me is my love of the community here. Why should i part from my hard earned cash, to get insider info on a company that doesnt seem to have much to do with, or even care about, our Forum community. I mean even though most of the forum community seem to hate MM, They still go ahead - Because they want to run a business - Which is understandable. Granted, The forum Mods & Stuff are nice people, and they arrange Escapism days, But the people sat in the offices in the Esc HQ, what do they make...Oh yeah...Game Dogs[/I].

I dont mean to sound like a Skeptic here, But with the influx of new members (hell, After the Valve vs Zynga fiasco, Imagine the advertising revenue they got from those hits, Must've been like christmas) & site popularity, Asking the site to pay for a forum that they dont really need just seems a tad Cheeky, If not a little bit cheap.

Unfortunately PM's like we got just seemed to add to the fire of "This place is going to be bought out by IGN" - Many places have become popular, Bought out by IGN, Fleeced & Marketed to the Hilt - Then left a souless hulk of what it once was...Its a shame the process is probably going to begin soon here.

The Thing is, the way i feel is a "Them And Us" Situation now, The forum community, Which probably gives a proportion of the revenue via the advertising & Site traffic to the Escapist, And the Suits, Who want to make as much money as they can from the site.

My question to the Escapist faculty is Should[/I] we part with our hard earned money? ZP is fine as it is, And we all seem to pay our ways be looking at the ads all over the site. (even the evony ones, Oh look, More boobs...)

I know the escapist is a business, But this just feels cheap/greedy to me.

Oh I guess I can spare $10. Since I'll never get down to Australia to drink from Yahtzee's bar, I might as well support him this way, and all the other fine works on this site as well. Plus I've been here two years for free, I can give you guys that.

But I too question the contest thing. I've tried before but due to my Canadianishness, I've never been able to enter. So what's the point of that? Are you guys going to be able to expand that to your neighbors from the North, or do I have to start yelling at Obama over trivial matters again?[sub]Thinks he can take my basketball....[/sub]

Will any member be able to view the new gate forums but not post? I'd like to see them before even considering this. the main reason I stopped posting regularly was because I didn't like the threads that were being posted, I don't want to join up just to find that the gated forums still has crap like, "why all the hate on Christians?" or whatever equivalent you like to replace that with.

EDIT: also, a list of premium member might be nice, just saying.

Just to be clear, I have to ask if I'm reading this right.

This is a subscription; an automatic payment which occurs every 12 months? Without manual or any other form of authorisation beyond the initial payment?

It doesn't come and ask us every 12 months "Are you happy to pay us?"

I'm intensely wary of -anything- which features automated payments, so I'd appreciate the clarification.

Oh, and if I give you guys money, can I stop people from using those goddamn .gif avatars which bug me as I'm trying to read? >_>

Unrelated: Also, Susan, question. You seem to write on the forums with a bit of an accent. Some of the words you use. And yet, it doesn't seem to come across in your video supplements or anywhere where I hear you speak. Are you aware of this? Is it on purpose? I'm curious ^^

The auto competetion entry, firstly being from the UK would I still be elegible as I'm not for most competitions the site runs and being automaticaly entered would me actually entering myself give me a second chance to win? I'm not hugely fussed, I'm just curious as it's a selling point.
Only for the ones that you'd otherwise be eligible for. We can't change the laws, unfortunately.

Will video downloads be playable on BlackBerrys?
I don't know - technically any phone identified as a smartphone should be able to try, but I don't know if BlackBerrys can play these videos. It might even depend on the version you have. I'll check around the office tomorrow to see if anyone has one that we can test on. We tested on several iPhones, an iPad, a Droid, and a Palm Pre (and my Zune HD, but that unfortunately doesn't work :p)

Really, you're now selling custom titles - making those titles earned through winning contests or posting a lot completely pointless...
Custom titles has been one of the most requested features from people on the site, second only to video podcasts. We did the code to add them in a while back, but there is a very high potential for abuse, and we don't want to have to moderate them constantly. People that subscribe are incredibly less likely to set their titles to something inappropriate, so it acts as a built-in filter.

People with special titles (from contests or otherwise) get both a custom title and the one that's set. These are pretty rare, so you will mostly only see it on staff.

Honestly, I don't think that it counts as one of the major features, but it's a nice little perk, and we wanted to throw in as many things as we could. Same as the badge.

D_987 said:
Wasn't there a user group created for this very purpose that was disbanded? Was it purposefully disbanded to make way for this paid membership group - if not, why was it disbanded if you're simply going to do the same thing?
It was disbanded because it wasn't going to work well in that format, so we killed the idea at that time. We still liked the original concept though, so we brought it back for this - it'll function differently though. Like the titles, this is also a matter of volume - we don't expect the thousands and thousands of people we have on the forums to all join, so slotting this into the member program means we have less traffic to handle in there.

ddq5 said:
Are swear words allowed in titles? Would one be allowed to identify oneself as a "Bad ************"?
Nope, standard common sense rules apply.

Lord Krunk said:
That is a fair point. Are there at least some terms and conditions associated with the forums?
All the same rules apply to everyone. A clarification of the forum guidelines is in the works, but it's completely unrelated to this.

Not a lower quality, at the same quality you've been seeing them at since we upgraded them late last year. We aren't changing anything for non-members.

Nope.

Here's something you may not know. Forum traffic is, in ad terms, completely worthless. It's a tiny percentage of our total site visitors that view lots of pages but never click on ads. Nobody wants to advertise in them. The forums are also the heaviest load on our servers, and require a dedicated employee and several very gracious volunteer moderators to even attempt to keep in line. As a business, we'd be better off not having most of our forums at all.

I'll leave it to you to decide why the "suits," every one of which who is a long-time dedicated gamer and has written articles about gaming for our site, keep the forums around. Frankly, as one of them, I find your insinuation pretty offensive.

Insanum said:

Here's the thing: As an ad-supported business, there are certain things we can and can't reasonably do. The membership program is a way to do two different things. First, it's a way for people who want to support the site but not see ads to support us and what we do directly.

Second, it's a way for us to add features that being ad-supported doesn't allow us to do. For example, we couldn't afford the bandwidth to serve the high quality video to everyone. Video podcasts mean people don't need to come to the site or see ads to see the videos. Full-content RSS feeds also keep people away from the site and ads.

If you don't mind seeing the ads, and none of the features sound like something you'd use, then by all means take a pass on this. I personally think that when you add everything up it's a nice set of features, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Well, if my title cannot be Bad ************, I'm afraid I'll have to settle with being a pleb and not a pub. Unless I came across an equally awesome title and an extra $10. It'd have to be pretty incredible though.
I was really looking forward to being a bad ************.

Either way, I understand the limitation. I can only imagine what sorts of foul titles could be thought up

Personally, I think you're already set with "Beat Writer".. In some states and provinces.
