Ever read the original Yu-gi-oh manga? The one with the Death games, and Yami Yugi mind fucking everyone who dared tried messing with him or his friends? No? All you remember is the anime and card game which was seriously toned down so that they could market Yu-gi-oh cards to kids? That's too bad.

This is probably my favourite/most despised moment of a character and/or series being put under the pussification ray. Don't get me wrong, I loved that series to death for 4 years of my life (which was when I also loved Digimon and Pokemon to death too), and amassed a pretty decently sized number of cards. It's just that compared to the awesomeness of the manga (which I read after the fact) the anime is really...repetitive. Also, making a character's strength dependent on their cards is kinda one sided.

So, what are some examples of series being toned down/changing themes that you haven't liked?

EDIT: Oh yeah. The manga version of the rest of the series (after the cards become the focus) is good too, since there's actually some pretty violent stuff. Unlike the stupid localized anime. Stupid 4Kids.

Pussification ray, didn't Yahtzee use this to describe Crysis? Comparing it to Far Cry.

Killzone was put under the pussification ray, I really miss ramming a mini-gun with a rocket launcher strapped to the bottom, into a space-nazis gentiles and hearing his high pitched/darth vader cries.

Yeah. I just thought that people here would get what I meant when I used it.

The main problem with these animes compared to mangas is that when they are dubbed by 4kids they do have the violence toned down a lot than what it used to be. I think in the original Yu-gi-oh anime they had Marik stab his Dad in the back with blood and all while in 4kids version it was only mind crush.

Was reading an LP of one of the Yu-gi-oh games, and the guy keeps bringing up the difference between the manga and anime which reminded me (I haven't read the manga in forever).

"Now you may be wondering how Pegasus got that piece of solid gold eyewear into his eye. Well in the anime Shadi holds it up to his eye and it glows and then replaces his eye. In the manga, a group of Egyptian dudes gouge out Pegasus' eye so Shadi can put the Millennium Eye in the socket to see if it will accept him as its owner. Yes, they gouged out his eye JUST TO CHECK IF HE COULD KEEP IT."

Yep that is how they do it old school but 4kids changes all that jazz.

Epic Mickey. Did you see some of the concept art for that?! Well the Media saw it to and started bitching at Disney ad so they pussified the shit out of it. It was going to be sweet! they should of made it a lot more horrific like this! Yet sadly no. To bad, it almost made me give a shit about Disney. Kingdom hearts is still the only Disney thing I truly loved.

A game with that would of made my day. Seriously fuck the media. (I know that this might of not even been the original plan for epic mickey but it still would of been sweet)

Didn't the original concept art have Mickey look like he was on crack or something? I just remember him looking really...disconcerting.

A little bit off topic here, but in my opinion, the Yugioh abridged series is much better than the actual anime.

Yes but in the game he goes in to a Disney land where all the old or forgotten characters are, and there is a different mickey running the place. My guess is that what the alternate mickey would of looked like

"Don't move a muscle or we'll shoot you with our invisible guns." You see that sort of thing all the time with Japanese cartoons, like the frothy mugs of water instead of alcohol. There's not much we can do about it except mock it, which can be kind of funny.

Actually, yes, I did read the original Yugioh manga (never saw the anime). Still the only manga I ever regret buying, since they creeped me right the hell out and dissuaded me from continuing.

Except the part in the restaurant with the lighter. That was pure awesomeness.

...and no, I can't think of any personal examples on the thread topic.

well it was made so that originally if you did bad things then mickey would look more like a rat monster or something but then a biker in a focus group said it was messing with his childhood so they took it out.

As Hal Sparks says, "You have the phrase backwards. The pussy is the stronger of the two genitals"

OT: I can't think of one but will edit this post if I do.

Lets see, there's the One Piece dub right off the top of my head.

"Yeah, I'm not pointing a gun at this kid's head, it's a mechanical hammer." God that was stupid. Oh, and replacing every gun with a water gun. Equally stupid.

Actually, come to think if it, TC got it right. Everything 4Kids touched turned to shit.

I also remember that there were a few minor edits to Kingdom Hearts 2. Xigbar's crosshairs during his boss fight changed to 3 dots, and all the pirates had their guns changed to crossbows (which still made gun-firing noises, oddly enough).

My friend who's a One Piece fanatic would tell me every difference between the 4Kids dub, and the disks we watched.

Here's a more mild example: Portal 2 had certain bits of dialogue that got dummied out. These were fairly brutal, and were cut out of the game after negative responses from playtesters. The main difference is that GLaDOS had some absolutely hateful, venomous lines that were a huge step above her usual passive-aggressive belittling. Here is the best one (it's also unusual because she calls Chell by name.):
There's also unused dialogue that shows that
Caroline was forced to become part of GLaDOS against her will. It sounds awfully like she's about to become a rape victim, which is why J.K. Simmons (Cave Johnson) refused to say his lines. Considering that he played a violent neo-nazi in OZ, it begs the question of just how fucked up his lines must have been. I won't embed it but you can listen to it here. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09GLj6fq-wg&feature=related] It starts around :25.
This isn't really pussification and in context, it was probably smart on Valve's part to leave at least some of this stuff out. Still, Portal 2 could have sounded much harsher in certain areas.

Damn give me the creeps every single time I hear it, it should have been left in the game... I also can see that it would creep out many other people, so I guess that was a right(but at the same time coward) move...

Freaking Robocop. Second film couldn't freaking pick a tone then the third barely had RoboCop in it and when he was in it he had been pussified.
