Why are they, sony mostly, trying to get their consoles to be everything else rather than a gaming console. I know it meets the needs of more casual gamers that way but to deny that it'd beneficial in the long term is absurd. We need dedicated serves to construct a community in games, and much better clan support console side. We can't be expected to play on random servers and be happy with merely going up ranks every so often. Can anyone shed any light on why they arn't doing so?

Money, always money, it is cheaper for them to add facebook or what ever to their consoles then add and maintain server support, because adding all the stuff for casual gamers will sell more consoles then just adding stuff for the existing market.

And WTF is "Q" gotta have a little more detail in your headings.

So they have a reason to rack up the price. Would you want a gaming console for $199 or a console that games, has Netlfix, lets you buys movies and accesses the Internet for $299?

Or would you much rather buy all that stuff seperatly.

Welcome to The Escapist! I think it's because people will start buying consoles for different reasons, and therefore more PS3's will be sold and Sony will make more money. After all, Sony is a business, and businesses exist to make money.

Because the idea never crossed their mind.

And, one word my friend: Money

Also, having a gaming console that can do extra features can be handy.

They don't need to maintain servers, like they currently do anyway. The dedicated servers would be set up and run by the players. The same as PCs.

and Q is question. Like my question at the end of my paragraph.

Im sure not everyone uses the ps3 as a media center, but as a gaming console. When I bought mine I didn't think, "awe sweet man, a cool dvd player"

Sony is a company, they are out to make money, if doing this is the best way in their eyes to do so then they will.

Also I came in looking for a discussion of letters, or even a comment on the radio show...now I'm a sad panda :(

Personally, I'd rather have a hunk of electronics taking up space in my house if it has more uses than just playing games.

Im pretty sure gaming where it's at, really.

The conclusion everyone appears to be reaching is money. I'm sorry but sony possess the funds to do this. They are not just a buisness they are an extremely succesful buisness. Im not saying stop going in the multimedia direction but they appear to be ignoring what is taken for granted on PC's.

Because Q is one letter and I was focusing on writing the question instead of thinking a bloody brilliant insightful title for you guys to click on and look at for about one second.

Right.. its all for Money. Thats basically why all the gaming companies will do what ever they do. If they made dedicated Servers then that would cost more money. Big company + parting of money = hell freezing over.... or a lawsuit.

In recent months I've been using my PS3 as a media center moreso than a games console. There just hasnt been any releases that interest me at present to use it as its origional function.

Got 2 500Gb external hard disks hooked up to the StayPlation at present, so its serving a very valuable purpose in that respect.

That's the developers choice, not the person who makes the console. Even then, they can make a lot more through maintaining servers.

It still doesn't give a lot of understanding as to the subject in the thread though. Question could be anything, you need to give the user an idea about what they're looking at and what they will see when they clink on the link.

A big selling point about the PS3 is the Blu-Ray Player. Its a lot better to buy a blu-ray player AND a game console over just buying a Blu-Ray player.

I immediately thought this thread would either be about the Star Trek character or the James Bond character.
But anyway...I think Sony are doing a great job with the PSP and PS3 as more than just a gaming machine. The PSP makes a very good MP3 player and video viewer, whilst the same can be said for the PS3. I find nothing wrong with that, nor do I see itself being spread too thinly.

As a gaming console, there are plenty of third party developers and such making some fantastic titles (and I don't just mean all of the games unique to the PS3)

I've had no major issues with any servers either on the online component of any game so I'd say don't fix what isn't broken. Sure there's the odd lag in a title or two now and again especially on a weekend but it happens and I can understand and live with it

Well, things like blu-ray enhance the games as well as supply the consumer with more features. I blu ray disc = up to 50gb of data. No more having two or three discs + each blu ray disc being coated to avoid scratching = less fuss and happy consumers.

Actually some games do have Dedicated servers like Resistance. Also Gears 3 for the 360 is also bringing in Dedicated Servers. I hope this makes some console gamers who haven't experienced Dedicated servers realise that they are a much superior system to the half P2P half server system that they have going in most games. Also hopefully they will see how much more efficient a server list is to matchmaking.

Yep, always about the money. This has happened a few times in the past and each time the consoles eventually faded away and attention was brought back to PC gaming. Its happening slowly now. :p

My guess Q is short form for question. OP, because consoles can serve as a good medium for introducing new technologies. Best example would be the PS2 and DVDs.

I'm currently tackling this issue myself. As I am moving away, I'm unsure whether to buy a TV with a built-in DVD player or, for £10 cheaper, buying a TV with a more sensibly shaped screen and no DVD player and just using me 360. With the latter I run the risk of XBox death and losing the ability to study films and, with the former, I run the risk of succumbing to the fate and the "not-quite-widescreen-looking" screen. I think multimedia has it's benefits, but it should never be allowed to infringe on the game-play capabilities of a machine. The Nintendo Wii, on the other hand, has neither multi-media nor decent gameplay capabilities... Huh.

On another note, I'm also considering saving me pennies for a shiny new PS3; The reason for this is, primarily, it's blue ray thing it's got goin for it. I refuse to studies these new fangled films without the proper means to do so. A plethora of crap PS3 games could be conceived as a bonus... I kid, I kid.
