I'm sure any online gamer has been in this situation many many times but I will lay out the situation out for everyone else if you haven't. You join a game/server, you really click with the team, wreak the other team, by the time the match is over there is no one left. Though this has been someone of an issue for years (usually hidden by large server sizes), L4D with its low number of people in each server magnifies the problem. I can't even count how many times that I've had entire teams ragequit if my team gets all 4 in on the first level (which it is difficult not to haha). It is not competitive people, just play the games! My question to you guys is there a penalty or solution to this problem?

Ban younger folks from playing video games for all time.

No not really, it comes with the territory.

Rage quitting sucks, because little jerks with a complex get to ruin the fun for everyone because they aren't getting their way. I personally wish there were more penalties for quitting a match because you're losing, but meh. Life goes on, and at least Left 4 Dead lets you replace people on the fly.

There was a custom game called Footman Wars...basically, three people to a team, four teams.
People would quit all the time in a huff.
It was obnoxious.
So yes, I know what you mean. It sucks. It happens a lot.
Stop posting on the same threads as me all the time. It makes me uncomfortable.

Aww, I loved that mode. Then again, Warcraft 3 in my experience was one of the greatest games for alternate modes and one of the worst ones for quitters. The slow agony of watching your base or team get torn apart is pretty tough. Maddening, one might say. I would often close my eyes and dream I was elsewhere.

Ugh, this is a huge problem in Gears of War 2. There is a LOT of quitting in GoW2, it's pretty normal for at least one person to leave pretty soon after the match starts (often even right away), and then usually someone else quits too, so before you know it you go from 5 vs 5 to 5 vs 3 or even 5 vs 2. (Noone else can join a game once it has started, and players who leave aren't replaced by bots or anything either.) No fun at all, for neither the smaller nor the bigger team, if you ask me. Stupid people.

I used to play DoTA a lot and it was a huge problem there as well. If someone quit, it was almost a sure-fire loss for your team unless the other team sucked.

DotA was an awesome game mode, but if you were outnumbered you really might as well kiss your butt goodbye, another example where quitting ruins all the fun. Sad...

I hate when this happens. Just ask Spartan Banana, Fish Food Carl, and Bling Cat, we gave up playing versus on L4D together after we played 4 matches in a row where we did well and the other team rage quitted on the first round. In the other games I play though (read: Call of Duty) rage quitting isn't really a problem unless said rage-quitter is the host.

I do, however, get pissed when I'm playing with friends I know in real life (the exact kind of people I wouldn't play with otherwise) and they yell "Oh no, my Kill:Death ratio! I'm backing out!". I make a point of never backing out with them, so they have to either wait for me any way or start a match and usually get slaughtered because the game matched them with a person who doesn't know their ass from their elbow.

Though I love the posts, people we need punishments and penalty ideas for these blasphemers of online gaming. Example: I think a quit from the first 2 levels of a L4D versus should have a 5 minute penalty stopping people from entering public servers. That way if they are leaving to enter a friend only game they can still play there, if they are leaving because they are getting off the game the 5 minute ban wont matter, and those bastards hopping from game to game get an annoying 5 minute flick to the balls. Something I saw done in WoW (back when i used to play idk if they still have it) was either a 15 or 20 minute ban, but i feel like that is alittle extreme for other games when you can't waste your time doing something else haha

I don't think I have played enough games where it is an issue, but yes I think there should be a penalty of sorts, I would say people would get round this by disconnecting their modem, but I dunno. I am sure there are people who live for rage quitters (not naming names *COUGH*Richard Groovy Pants*COUGH*

Crossfire (which is like Counter-Strike, but it's actually fun) has a system where if you quit prematurely then you are penalised, and perhaps this should be implemented but only if you are on the game from the start.

I actually don't have so much of a problem with rage quitting. I have a problem with hosts quitting. I was playing Tf2 on 2forts and had just thrashed the pther team and The host (on the other team) quit halfway through the next match when our team took the lead with an all scout team (that shows they didnt have an engineer).

It is actually not too bad now I think, if people quit early on, 4v5 is still fairly balanced since they get experience faster in the long run. If they quit a bit later, the rager's money and items are available to their teammates.

I absolutely hate rage quitters. It's pretty sad that someone would get that worked up about a game. I've had my team rage quit faster than you can say... uh... something that doesn't take a long time to say. It makes me mad and just kinda makes you look like a dick.

There could be a simple solution-if someone quits early, they cannot play multiplayer unless invited by a friend for five minutes, with increasing penalties if they keep doing it.

You need to take the attitude that me and my "team" of friends do, and if we rape them the first round or 2, just ass about for the rest of the game (you know, run on ahead on your own, try to take down tanks single handed etc.)

Rage quitting wouldn't be as much of problem if there's a way to fill the empty seats left behind, although yes, you might just end up with more rage quitters in their place, but this at least means that the victims can still go up against a full team.

Some MMO minigames I've seen really punish rage quitting by not allowing you to start another game until the last one would have ended. Cooldowns would really deter them from leaving.

I guess rage quitting is symptomatic of people wanting to win that much. I personally don't mind losing; I accept that I'm not better than half the players out there, but I'll play on for that headshot. Unless they're teabagging of course, they can go fuck themselves in that case.
It'd be ideal if everyone didn't take things so seriously, but you know how selectively deaf these assholes are.

Halo 3 is pretty good about it...you lose 2 XP for quitting prematurely, and XP can be a precious thing because you're not guaranteed a point every match unless you always place first. (talking about FFA; you always get one if you're on a winning team). That being said, people still end up quitting a decent amount.
