Unless you were playing it at an arcade with some sort of ghetto homebrew cabinet, that game supported SIX players.
Both four-player and the rarer six-player cabinets existed. As you mentioned, the six-player cabinets had a dedicated position for each X-Man while the four-player version had select screens. Also, the Japanese version had power-ups! If you still enjoy it, go get it for XBL or PSN! =D

The arcade game that ate most of my quarters would probably be the Capcom D&D series, christ I loved those games, to this day i'm still tempted to scream out STICKS TO SNAKES!!! when I play a cleric
You, Sir, can go die in a fire!
My buddies and I still play that on MAME (because of the lack of a real arcade in our town now) and I swear to God this actually happened:
*Red Dragon is obliterating us*
"Alright, let me show you boys how this is done...STICKS TO SNAKES!"
*Casts Sticks to Snakes and kills Red Dragon*
"Fuck. Off."
Yeah. I don't like Sticks to Snakes. Not one bit.
OT: Lucky & Wild, Simpsons Arcade, X-Men Arcade, Time Crisis 2, Sunset Riders, TMNT, D&D, D&D2 and oh so many more...
