Of course I read it. Why deny myself good reading just because it's fanfiction (or is that "fan fiction")? Sure, most of it is bad or just not good as other stuff, but that's the case with normal books as well, so by that logic you'd have to stay away from all reading.
I write it as well.

I'd say I'm shocked at how few people are saying they have written it. I guess TECHNICALLY I haven't written any, but I'm in the middle of writing one so I'd consider it worthwhile.

Frankly, though, I agree. I've never been to a site that has them or even read any, I just want to try and make a story set in a universe with characters I enjoy. Unfortunately for me, the story is set in Discworld and I can never live up to the high standards I'm working against, but I still think I have at least a decent story in mind.

And it's definitely not Rincewind/Luggage slash.

i avoid it because the stories there based on are much better.
quick tip. if you write fan fiction simply change the name of most things, change the way some stuff looks, and BAM you have an original story.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.

Fanfiction!?! *Avoids like plague*

It's just kinda lame in my expirience. Leave the writing to teh writers. if you have a good idea and want to write a story; make your own story.

I've had my hand at some fan fiction, and I think the idea is really good: A new story in a familiar setting. It opens the doors for new possibilities with old material.

What I don't like is fan-fiction used for sexual fantasies, or when it changes established characters. For example, I would never write a story starring Drizzt Do'Urden. His character has been made, and I don't have the inner knowledge of the character (That only the author can have, I believe) to set him out on a new adventure. I might write a story starring a Dwarf from Mithril Hall, or an Elf from Moonwood who knew Drizzt, but never would I write his character.

So it can be great, it can be weird, and it can be disgusting...but so can other fiction.
Just like buying a book at a store, you have to sift through the crap.

Avoid it like the plague is a tad harsh. I dont avoid it, but I dont seek it out.
Your poll needs a "Never read any" option. The I have done both option is redundant, as if you write fanfiction, you have obviously read some, even if it was your own.

I was so frustrated that the KoTOR story was never completed that I read some fan fiction about it. I expected it to be mostly crap, but maybe I was lucky. The stuff I encountered was surprisingly good.

I don't claim to know much about story writing, but I have written maybe a dozen User Manuals. Not sure if they qualified as fiction or non!

I didn't read any (don't seek it out), and my attempts at writing some have failed miserably. I guess i can say that i wrote it, but it was never published. And never will be.

...

OHWAIT!
