The thing with Skyward Sword is, Nintendo said they were going to do something different - then
(from what I've seen) followed the standard formula. It's a little disappointing.

Still, if it gets good reviews, I s'pose I'll give it a shot.

Zelda, Mario - they're old and milked nearly to death. There's almost no room to grow. Certainly, Nintendo did a better job in keeping their babies alive (something that Sega didn't bother about) but, still, I think it's time to move on for Nin.
I don't actually think Mario has been milked to death, because honestly when a character appears in everything from an RPG to a fucking TENNIS game, it's not really about the character anymore, they are really just a generic placeholder and the only thing remotely similar about all the games are many of the textures.

So I don't think Mario has been overused, because "Mario game" isn't a type of game anymore, it's a texture pack.

Also, Zelda is the kind of series where as long as you have fresh puzzles, dungeons, and bosses, it can't really get stale.

^This. You see, it's not about Mario as a character. It's about games like Super Mario Galaxy.

Oh I see, It's the Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy core lineup.

Yeah I can see that.

I still like Paper Mario though! (with the exclusion of Super Paper Mario)

Quite possibly, to me it seems they didn't know what graphic style to go with, cute cartoon or more realistic. *Brainwave* Lets put them both together! But judging it solely on its presentation isn't really fair, which is what some people did with Wind Waker and missed out on an awesome game. So yes I probably will get it, although maybe not on the release date.

I wonder what three things we are going to have to collect to create the thing that allows us to fight ganon, but we realize we aren't strong enough so we need to go collect the pieces of the triforce and zzzzzzzzz

OT: Not really.

Nope. Zelda games haven't really been for me.
Same here, I don't have a Wii and I've never been much of a Zelda guy. I'll try it but it probably won't inspire me to spend my few remaining student dollars on a Wii. I will remain ever the curious outsider, peaking infrequently into a secret club of people who have been playing Zelda before I could lift a controller.

You mean the Metroid franchise? Because the Prime games were just a third-party trilogy and two spinoffs.

OT: I don't care how much it follows the formula or how the controls are changed, Zelda is just fun to play. So I'm looking forward to it.

I don't know, I'm thinking it's past time to lay the Zelda franchise to rest. But then again, I'd say the same for a number of other franchises as well.

Oh and incidentally, it's my birthday today.

Not until Nintendo finally bothers with voice acting. If you're going to stick me with your usual shitty Zelda plot drivel and exposition, at least give me some voice work for once.

If it's bad, I can laugh at it. If it's good, it's good.

Super Mario Sunshine is no less of a game, despite it's horrid voice work. Zelda can take the hit just as easily.
Many would disaggre with you, but im not one of them. People need to stop listing the CD-i games as a reason there shouldnt be VA in Zelda. If Nintendo put some serious effort into giving Zelda decent VA, there wouldnt be a problem.

Congratulations, cakes for you! But, Google them yourself, as I can't bother. Sorry.

I'm looking forward to it, yes. The Zelda franchise needs to go waaaay downhill before I lose interest. And I don't want any snarky comments on that one, because I've enjoyed every Zelda game since A Link to the Past.

I'm looking forward to it. The main console Zelda games have yet to make me frown (Adventure of Link aside.)

As long as they don't look at Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass as a 'good way to go.' we'll be fine.

You seriously want Link to have a talk? Really? I could understand (barely) if the motion controls or the art style threw you off, but the reason for not planning on buying it is a lack of voice acting?
I, for one, would rather use my imagination on characters' voices. That way it sounds better than any voice actor could and everyone gets a unique and imaginative experience. It's also flat out never going to happen.....ever. Also, there's much more dialog in Zelda than in Mario....by about 1000x....literally.

Yea? How are Bungie and Activision doing with that "growing" thing? Big innovations in the last Halo and CoD eh? Every single one of them for that matter just overflowing with creativity inventiveness!

Seriously though I really don't understand how people are saying Zelda is stale. First of all, there have been less console Zelda games in the past 10 years than there were GTA's, Halo's, CoD's, etc. (not to mention all the sport franchises....ugh) and every single one of them has been dramatically different.

Second, Zelda is an undefined game! The only way any of them are similar is in certain gameplay mechanics (sword, shield, collect items, solve puzzles) and if you think the games are too similar for this reason alone, then you must think that the shooting genre was milked to death about 5 years ago and all new platforming games are stale. Every Zelda has a new story, art style, and setting, new characters, items, abilities, music, puzzles, and now, with Skyward Sword, a drastically different control method. If Ocarina of Time and Windwaker didn't both star a kid in a green tunic and hat, they would barely be comparable.

Why is it that Nintendo games are the only ones that are bashed for lack of innovation, when in reality, they are the among the least deserving of it.

Well, I'm a fan of the series, so I can't wait for the game to hit the shelves.
But! I really hope the motion control turns out okay, I'm a little skeptic.

I buy it anyway :)

I'm looking forward to it. We don't know anything (I dare you to find something concrete) about the broad formula of the game, so I'm not going to comment on it being "another Zelda game" or not, but the art style looks clever, the gameplay looks like it could go in some interesting directions and, having played and enjoyed Red Steel 2, the motion controls aren't a put down for me. So yeah, I'm optimistic, but there's a bit of a lack of information for me to really swing one way or the other. We'll see.

Mostly because people are shallow.

They'll look at a shooter sequel and think it's a whole new game because they're fed with new dialogue and cutscenes (and possibly a new environment), but then they'll look at Zelda or Mario and just see the hero saving the princess again and ignore all the gameplay innovations and actual storytelling.
