The last game I bought in a box (any box) was Half-Life 2. Paying more for media and extra junk makes no sense to me, Just give me the bits.

There have been three instances where I have bought the special edition. The first was The Gears of War 2 Special Edition, the second was the Dragon Age: Origins Special Edition, and the third was the Mass Effect 2 Special Edition. I only buy them when I'm really looking forward to a game. Other than that they cost too much to buy on a regular basis.

I generally try to get a special edition if I can, but there's times where I've been unable to or didn't.
I was going to get the BioShock 2 special edition but I got the standard game for £20 (yay Steam), and since completing it I'm actually glad I didn't. As much as I loved BioShock 2, there's no way I can justify £40 on a 6-7hr game.
Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins I own in Digital Deluxe forms (Sort of wish I hadn't with Mass Effect 2, glad I did with Origins so Yay Steam Sale!)

I wish I'd gotten the Age of Conan special edition (it's very nice) even though I don't play AoC, and I wanted the King's Bounty: The Legend/Oblivion/LotRO: Mines of Moria/Fallout 3/Far Cry 2 special editions. I love it when it costs the same (or ~£10 more) but you get so much more.

Also wish I'd gotten the Lawful Good edition of NWN2 instead of Chaotic Evil ;)

The only SE I've got is for Infamous, and I could quite gladly live with a regular version of that

Occasionally since I'm a bit of a collector.
Hence the reason when I saw Jade Empire Special Edition for PC for Au$20 and God of War 2 Special Edition for Au$12 I jumped at the opportunity.

It depends on the contents, but more importantly on the game.
If it's a game from a series I love, or if it's an original game I'm hoping/assuming I'll love, and it has nice stuff coming with it, I'll probably try to buy the special edition.
Oh, and pricing actually matters as well; some special editions cost a lot but don't offer anything I am particularly interested in.

Posters, artbooks, and soundtrack. NOOOOOOOOOOO.

Figurines, other cool stuff, and DLC. YEEEEEEEES.

Which is why Bioshock 2 Spec Edition sucked to me.

Only if it's a game that I would actually preorder. If I'm not so 100% about it that I don't want to put money down on it guarenteeing that I'll pick it up, I'm probably not getting the special edition.

Im just a poor college student, so I don't go for the 'Shiny Box'. Not saying that I wouldn't bc I definately preorder sometimes to get little 'happymeal-like' toys, so if I had the money and liked the game i would definately buy the shiney box

You know, the developpers sometimes don't tell the whole truth about the special editions. I bought Halo Wars Special Edition because it said you get new ingame vehicles, they didn't specify you couldn't use them in multiplayer or that they were just paint jobs and had nothing to do with the gameplay. RIP OFF.

I had to buy the Mass Effect 2 Collectors edition because the regular edition box art pissed me off for some reason.

Plus I love the metal boxes :D

Depends on the game and what goodies come along with special editions. but the majority of the time it is the regular edition.

Depends on whats in it, is it the higher version of the game with a special doodad that looks fucking awesome and shoots rainbows?

Or is it the game with an exclusive map, a few action figures of the game, and a ring.

Oh and the price also is a factor of it to.

The only special edition I've bought was Quake 4. The reason: Quake II was on the bonus disc. I loved Quake II, but I'd managed to lose my disc several years back. As such, I was delighted to see that I could get it again.

I can't say definitively, but at least 99% of the time I avoid the special edition. One thing that can be annoying is when a company ONLY releases a special edition of a game. Working Designs was infamous for this with the Lunar games for the PSX, where you only had a collectors edition available at an increased cost. To be fair, the things they included were rather original (OST, Cloth Map, Pendant) and I think it was only $10-$20 extra, but the fact that new copies HAD to be that edition was rather pretentious.. Great games though.
