In order of most to least favourite (of the ones I have played), Twin Snakes, Snake Eater, Sons of Liberty.

Conlicted between 1 & 2, decided to lean every so slightly towards two and topple into it's questionable embrace. Sons of Liberty is definitely the MGS that had it all, great stealth, characterisation up the wazoo, solid combat, an enimga with a riddle kind of story with some great twists, some of the most memorable boss battles ever, the hardest reply options known to man at the time. Still nothing has equalled Euro Extreme in MGS2 for sheer unequivicol unrelenting difficulty. I should really go back to it sometime, I did MGS1 not too long ago.

Not the say MGS3 and MGS4 aren't freaking EPIC games. MGS3 technically might be the best looking game on the PS2 and it definitely has the charactisation, environments and story down. Some of my favourite moments in gaming are from MGS3.

I have yet to play Peace Walker, to my considerable loss. I want to pick up a new PSP before I settle into it, maybe the Go since I'm looking for an MP3 player, and as long as I BUY the game on UMD, I see no reason not to arrange myself a less inflated digital copy.

Well, I've only played the original, so I guess that's my answer. I haven't finished it though.
It was pretty awesome, but the themes/roots weren't really directed towards me really or really my style. I like the series, but I myself prefer Splinter Cell in terms of stealth games, although I'm not sure why the 2 get compared, because MGS is a futuristic Manga based espionage action thriller about a clone stopping a giant robot mech who launches nukes, while also fighting through various interesting "boss" characters, including Psycho Mantis, while Splinter Cell is a modern or near future espionage action thriller based in American action movies (the good ones) about a government stealth operative who has gone rogue to find hiis daughter's murderer, only to reveal a conspiracy to assassinate the president.
Or maybe it's because I freaking love the sound of Michael Ironside's voice.

Never played based on the point that I don't like stealth games.

You can't force me to choose between MGS 1, 3 and 4!
I refuse to!

Also, Raiden doesn't exist.

Have played MGS 1,2 and 3 and loved them all. But the second game, Sons of Liberty, is my favourite.

MGS4 is the greatest console game to ever grace this earth, if not the best game period.

The PSP Go doesn't play UMDs (digital download only)so I recommend PSP 3000 model with your music file saved to a memory stick. Either that or wait to see what's up with the PSP 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106866-Rumor-Sony-Making-PSP2-Announcement-ASAP]

2 has slightly better gameplay (in my humble opinion), but I still went with 1 for its lack of retardation. The ending cutscenes in MGS2 almost made me hate the game. It's like NGE, just endless pseudo-philosophical monologue over stock footage of water and people walking.

I haven't played 3 or 4.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is definitely in my top three greatest game experiences of my life. My first playthrough was an ungodly kind of amazing. I love the others (except the PSP titles, as I've never played them), but Snake Eater was goddamn glorious.

I'm stilllllll in a dreaaaammm SnaaAAAKEE EAAATerrrr! (bum-barm-bah-BAHHHH!!!)

Best balance of gameplay, typically mental storyline, excellent cutscenes, fantastic boss fights and jaw dropping graphics (for the time).

The best thing I can say about it though, is soundtrack, one of the few game OSTs I've hunted down and bought.

Portable Ops was my favorite. I played MGS2, I think, and watched my boyfriend play 3 and 4. They were a bit weird. Portable Ops could have been weird too, for all I know. I didn't get to play very much of it because the PSP and the game weren't mine. But I really enjoyed it while I did play it.

Metal Gear Solid 3. The ending still makes me cry and the stealth actually made sense!
