the ending to MGS3 made me weep. I was also surprised how much was crammed into Peace Walker. Probably the one with best soundtrack was MGS2.

I spent two weeks searching about for a brick-n-mortar to still have an old copy of 'Subsistance' in stock (eventually found a viable online seller through Amazon, but I wasn't going to go the eBay route if I could avoid it), so I couldn't in my right mind just tack my vote on to the 'Snake Eater' pile...

MGS3 had the most grounded story of the post-PS1 MGS crowd, and the gameplay improvements immediately place it above MGS1. Sure, MGS4's story is, to coin the phrase of a close friend, "pure japanime garbage", but it was most unintelligible where you have to deal with MGS2's psychosexual ramblings... which, to me, makes it the real reason the series gets such a bad rap from gamers and critics the world 'round.

My ranking:
MGS3: Subsistence
MGS: Twin Snakes
MGS3: Snake Eater
MGS: Integral (lowered due to limited access here in the US)
Metal Gear Solid
MGS4: Guns of the Patriots
MGS2: Substance
MGS2: Sons of Liberty

*Please note: In nearly all cases, the secondary "special" releases will overtake the original release, and possibly the next original release above it.

I, for one, am waiting impatiently to see if the HD rerelease rumors are true... especially if the refinements of the later titles are to be retrofitted to the earlier games on the disk, or at least use the superior special edition releases in the compilation.

Metal Gear Solid 3. The ending still makes me cry and the stealth actually made sense!
I have to say I love them all but the ending it what makes MGS 3 (Subsistance) my favourite. And I have to agree that the stealth made a lot more sense in the way that if you were hidden you actually felt as though a guard wouldn't see you. Also, although this goes for all the game but its soundtrack is god-like.

The first MGS on the original Playstation, as it is the only one I have played.
It was a wonderfully realised game considering the limits of the technology and enjoyed every minute; right up to the point where the final cut scene came in and I realised the story was a double helping of pretension with a side order of crazy. Never really had much interest in the series after that.

I remember loving MGS3, so I picked that one. But considering that every other game after that has felt like just a big mess after another to me (and I'm not even talking about the story, mind you) not counting the Acid games which just weren't for me so I can't really judge, I can't help but feel that I might have been just young and stupid. I haven't been able to play it after my Subsistence-disc broke like 4-5 years ago and it's a ***** to get a new one here with a reasonable price.

It was also a tough pick between MGS3, Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid on GBC. MG2:SS was also good, but other than that, I don't really care for the series and I've played pretty much all of them except for Snake's Revenge. MGS4 and Peace Walker were a total waste of presentation values and good control design.

Toss up between Peacewalker and Ac!d for me.
Peacewalker just shows that shooters/stealth can actually works smoothly on the PSP, and it was actually fun.
Ac!d just has an amazing story and despite some annoyances actually pulled off the Metal Gear transition to a card based game pretty well.

Well, I mean in previous games if a guard saw your foot you would be getting shot. In MGS3 a guard could (and has) look right at you and wouldn't know you are there until he stepped on you. Camouflage was probably the best idea MGS has had (aside from the stealth suits).

Oh wait it was Metal Gear SOLID. And I was going to say metal gear for the NES.

In that case I will have to say that I haven't played them.

1 started it all. Awesome game.
2 was quality. Had a great continuation, but I didn't like Raiden.
3 had my favorite cast of characters, and the best written story.
4 was amazing in terms of cinematic and gameplay quality.
Peace Walker is awesome, all around. The problem is, I've only played the demo.

I've only every played the first 20-ish minutes of the first MGS game a long long time ago, to the point where you got the first (sub)machinegun from the back of a truck or something. That doesn't really count I guess.

I guess I must've liked it enough to be quite excited about the rumour of a remake of the first 3 games for the PS3. I really wanted to play the MGS games for quite some time, but I never had proper access to a PSX and PS2.

SNAAAKKKE EEEAAAAAATTEEERRRRR!

I think the MGS3 theme makes it an easy choice for me. I love them all but with Cynthia Harrell singing that bond-esque song just makes the game excel!

Also eating the Tsuchinoko is good for some lols.

It has ALWAYS been a hard choice between MGS1 and MGS3. So very hard.
I chose MGS3 for the poll, but I could really go either way.

MGS 3 subsistance without a doubt.
I managed to pick it up for a tenner and I played it non-stop for like three weeks.
