As far as DLC goes, Mass Effect has been a mixed bag. Bioware is one of the companies I purchuse DLC from, and obviously as someone with strong opinions about it, I have tried enough of it to know what I'm talking about.
To put things into perspective, "Lair Of The Shadow Broker" is one of the things that should have been included as part of the main game. What's more there is evidence it was planned from the very beginning due to the prescence of voice files for Liara in the main game, long before the release of the DLC, which caused a lot of contreversy over gouging. Simply put given her popularity from the first game (and apparently everyone's favorite romance option), Bioware knew that by not including her in the main game but as DLC they could make more money.
The problem with these "bit sized chunks" of additional content is that they are overpriced for what you wind up getting. I have no real issue with expansion packs, but I think paying $5 to $15 depending on company for something that includes at most a couple of hours of play time and very few new game assets (reusing tiles, graphics, and other things from the main game) is going a bit far as a money making gimmick. My opinion for a long time has been that you should probably get roughly 1 hour of play from an expansion for every dollar spent. I look back at things like Origin's expansion packs for "Wing Commander" and "Ultima 7" as more or less how things should be done, but of course there is less money to be made that way which is why you don't see it.
In the long run we'll see what happens, I know there are many people who disagree with me, but to be honest as time goes on, I am finding DLC to be more and more of a way of nickel and diming players. It seems like things that the player base really wants are being held out of games to be sold later for extra money. In the end the cost of getting all the material for a game winds up being pretty bloody high, which is annoying given that games are already pricy enough as is.
