Yes. My attention span is drastically higher due to my experience as a gamer. Also, I have learned to determine what is and isn't worth my time.

Gaming doesn't, it rather is one of the few occasions where my attention is pretty much undivided.

Oh, but the interwebs dang sure do (i opened 4 new tabs while composing this lenghty, lengthy entry)!

I also want to present this dilemma:
Lenghty study results in nerdspeak -> Journalist -> That one headline that catches all those readers with short attention spans ;)

My attention span is probably the worst anybody has ever experienced. Video games isn't the cause of it though.

I voted yes, but allow me to qualify that.

I wargame. Thus my attention span is necessarily capable of 2 hour spans of tactical thinking, observing every possible move by my enemy and countering it before he does it (not that I'm all that good yet). Now I play Space Wolves/Daemonhunters and I am the child of two theatre people, so I do play to the character and honour of the army rather than playing "to win," but nonetheless.

Video games (and the Internet) did nothing but lead into that. I can sit in front of my computer for hours at a time if it's an interesting game or site. The tactics...they're still coming along. >.>

I think that if my mind goes to gaming, it's cause what I'm doing right now is boring as hell.

Example, when I was writing a paper on treatments for Somatoform disorders, a freaking awesome subject btw, It had my full attention for about a week.

When I had to write my oral for French class however, you have no idea how often My mind went to playing team fortress 2.

I am a lifelong gamer and I still have a larger attention span than most of the people I know. If anything they help me to focus by keeping me "moderately" sane.

Yes, I do. I think it can lengthen one's attention span. I started gaming at an early age, and I'd say I have a longer attention span than many of my peers (I read Moby Dick for fun!).

I'm not sure myself. When I was younger on me SNES I reckon it helped me improve my concentration at home and school.

Surprising how due to the ambiguity of the poll question and the phrase 'attention span' being taken as 'attentiveness' how skewed some of the answers are and I would then assume the poll...

OT: My attention span has been adversely affected by gaming quite badly, then again it could simply be because Iv'e become more apathetic but i'm willing to bet it's the former.

I think it does affect your attention span, but not in a negative way. It takes a lot of time, patience and attention to sit and play through large epics like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. As for how it can affect how we cope in school, me and many of my friends have gamed for as long as we can remember, and most of us are in University, I don't see how gaming has negatively affected us.

Not in any appreciably way; I play games quite a bit and I can still read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in one sitting. There's a joke that it's 'Attention Surplus Disorder'.
