I currently hate 3D cinema but that's cos it's blatantly just a gimmick used to reel in the zombies
But in gaming it could be impressive, but only if everyone can do what Nintendo's done and get rid of the need for glasses

So yeah, I couldn't answer cos right now it's a fad but could possibly turn into something awesome

Its like the Wii controllers, it's just a gimmick right now. But when someone actually gets it to actually [i/]work[/i] it'll be awesome.

I'm fully on board with the idea that it's the next step in home entertainment. The fact that 3D has really only received public exposure via cheap theater gimmicks certainly might explain the cynicism that has been put upon the idea.

Somebody once made stereoscopic pictures (pictures taken from different angles, cross your eyes and it's 3D) of scenes from Mass Effect, and I tell you what, I instantly appreciated the amount of work that went into some of the set pieces. The drive core on the Normandy, in particular. When I played the game, I never spent more than ten seconds total time looking at the drive core, but in 3D, I actually got a sense of scale and presence. It went from being a pretty setpiece to being an impressive piece of machinery.

So, yes, I'm fully behind 3D and I can't wait to see it become reasonably affordable for the average consumer. I'm also really hoping to see people work within the new, expanded boundaries set by the presentation of a third dimension on our screens, as opposed to just making more "OOOOOOOH LOOK I'M WAVING MY HAND IN YOUR FACE OOOOOOOOOOH" gimmicks like the ones we're all frankly tired of.

I personally don't get why everyone is against 3D - yes, the technology is still young and very expensive, but so was blu-ray and HD-TV's when they first came out (anyone remember Sony's E3 06 press conference? "$599.99" haunted many people that day...)

The glasses aren't too intrusive, although I wish they would make 'goggle' versions that you can wear over regular glasses, and there is a MUCH bigger distinction between 2D and 3D, compared to SD and HD.

While the tech won't be picked up anytime soon by the masses, I reckon we'll be seeing cheap and affordable 3D TV's in a few years. For now, its too expensive, and yeah I think Sony isn't doing the right thing pushing it so hard in the marketing department when its still too young, but I do think it will be the next big thing in a few years time.
young? 3D has been around for 40-50 years. in those 40 years, 3d has been nothing but a gimmick and will continue to BE a gimmick.
Not true - the 3D we see today is very different from 3D we saw all those years ago. For one thing, polarised 3D is a hell of a lot better than the red and green bollocks of old.

Furthermore, previous versions of 3D never had the same amount of marketing push as this one - old 3D never came to theatres (mostly they were found in theme parks, etc), let alone TV's.

The only reasons why it has been a gimmick for the past 40 years is because it was marketed as a gimmick - nobody really thought of seriously commercialising it, but now, with Nintendo hedging the future of its handheld market dominance on the device, and not only Sony, but other companies like Panasonic and LG all producing mass-market (albeit expensive for now) 3D tv's, cooperate companies are making 3D more than a gimmick.

If you ask me, more realistic gadgets are a better way to connect gamers with a product then 3D. Like a realistic Pip-boy with Fallout that interacts with the game and displays real-time info. Or a crystal ball with holographic projection thats aides you thru your fantasy questing. A robotic version of your ingame companion while you venture into the depths of the abbys together, or existing things like steering wheels, guns or even arcade-controllers.
And instead of making them limited editions and costing a fortune, they should be included in the standard package and if a sequel or likewise-game comes out give those already having said gadgets from buying the first game, a fixed discount on their next purchase (for a version without the gadget ofcourse)!
3D will only make games more addictive or repulsive because it all feels too real.
But thats just me, gheh.

At least, I hope it's a fad. I get migraines easily, and when a movie or game is in 3D, I can't use it without getting a fucking blistering headache. I hope that 3D dies with fire.

No, people keep shoving it where it doesn't belong and that takes up production time. I'd rather people started working on their actual games instead.

meh. maybe. personally I don't think 3-d really makes that huge of a difference in your gaming/Tv/movie experience, but to each his own.

Meh. It's a step up to the next big thing, which is holograms. It's definatly a interesting type of sprinkles on top of the ice cream, but it won't be a new flavor of ice cream like holograms would probably be.

Technically wouldn't everything... ever, just be a passing fad, as it all gives way to improvements and changes eventually? That's just humanity for ya, constantly fiddling with things that are fine how they are.

They haven't come up with enough original uses for it to have any serious staying power. It just looks slightly better.

I haven't seen the previews since its impossible for me to do so, but I can't imagine 3D being that immersive. If it gets PAper Mario put on a DS though, I'm for it for now.

Wait until they realise that not enough gamers give a shit about 3d. Man, will their faces be red.
They should be focusing on more important things, like giving us a cheap version of that really big ball you can walk in and play shootin' games on. That's all I want.
I mean, if they literally stopped making games for a while and just came together, pooled all of their money and worked on VR seriously? I'd be happy. I guess they could keep a business anchor, Nintendo would do, to perpetuate money flow.
