Sooner or later, people are going to realize 3D doesn't make storytelling, complex characters or interesting scenes and fun better and it'll get dropped. In fact, the only reason I think Avatar did so well, told a really good story with interesting, likeable characters and interesting events, was because they did the 3D right (not stapling it on near the end of development). Most other people don't get that, and they suffer for it.
hd, color, or even any sort of screens at all dont do any of that either. Most worst books have better stories and characters than the best movies or games, 3d will help provide better depth perseption, which will really help in pretty much anything. New dimentions are always good.

Maybe in the cinema if it's implemented well like in Avatar. However, I don't want to have to wear glasses to play video games or TV.

I need a third option. I don't think it's the next big thing, but rather, the next step in graphics technology. It was more or less inevitable once we moved away from sprites and into polygons. I'm not happy about there being another distraction from developing good storyline, gameplay, etc., but there's not a lot that can be done.

On a side note, anyone notice how all the new changes are always greeted as fads by most gamers? I bet the crowd here would have said that polygons are blocky and won't last long.

I doubt it. And polygons don't give everyone headaches after a short time watching them. Holograms, on the other hand, I would euthastically support as The Next Big Thing [in display technology], but so far, 3D has yet to impress me. Also doesn't help that, so far, only the 3DS actually caters to people like me who already wear glasses.

That just the thing though. Holography couldn't come out without first going through 3D anymore than, say, space travel could exist before aeroplanes. And come to think of it, I think there are some people already working on it... Let me find the video...

Ah, here it is.

Well 3D has been around for ages and it's been through stages of being very popular before now, so I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's a fad.

Until we get a gaming system like in Star Ocean 4, where it's complete VR and it becomes a workout, then I refuse to believe in 3D gaming. I want the Holo deck from Star Trek, or keep gaming the way it is.

Actually, no. Holography and the stereoscopic 3D are two wholly different technologies.

As for the video, already seen it - note that the technology has little to do with 3D stereoscopy.

As for polygons, they were tried and succeeded, whereas 3D...

Has been around awhile and not done well [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy]

I don't really think it will be the "next big thing", but I think it can become pretty huge in the future. I say it is a fad for now, but when technology evolves, all games will probably incorporate it.

I think 3D is here to stay. It needs to lose the glasses though.

My money's on fad. From my own personal experience with 3D, it will have to get a lot better before it can dominate any entertainment industry.

I sure hope not. It's not that the glasses are stupid-looking and annoying to wear (which they are), it's that one of my eyes is stronger than the other and messes with my depth perception. If 3D becomes the next big thing everyone like me, everyone missing an eye or blind in one, and everyone with certain kinds of colorblindness (red-green is found in about 10% of the population) will be FUCKED. And everyone else is going to hear about it every single day at great length.
If I can't have fun, none of you can.

Both of these answers should have "...again." at the end. I think this is a Fad...again. People seem to forget this stuff was around in like the 70s lol

I see it as a fad...but, it could lead to even greater developments!

It was a fad from movie theaters until Sony decided to add it to their PS3s and HDTVs.

Fad fad fad. I don't wanna spend 3000 bucks on a television just for 3D (even if it looks cool).
