Usually go fire... even though in some games, like Blue/Red, fire was a pain in the ass to start with...

I always go for the fire type as they are normally the coolest.
I never would have guessed...

OT: Both are important. It might have some fucking epic moves but if it look like a pink puppy, I don't want it.

Generally by type. Usually I'm a fire man, so I usually go for the fire starter. However, on the odd play through, I decide that I can fill my quota for awesome fire types by catching them, so I'll go with the water or grass (based on final evolution).

Though, I wont out and out deny that cuteness isn't a factor some of the time. Charmander is by far the cutest little fucker out there, so even if I'm not that fond of Charizard I will still consistently pick him :D

cuteness for the first play through, If I start a second i gauge which elements are hard to find, which usually ends up as fire.

I look at a wiki or something to see what the fully evolved form looks like, and I choose from that. I'm more inclined towards the water pokemon though.

I almost always go water type on my first run through. Just because I loved Squirtle that much. The one exception was Diamond/Pearl where I picked Chimchar. Always have to side with flaming poo attack, but it was a hard decision.

Strength, totally. Unless they have some kind of Excel Saga-esque attack where there cuteness prevents others from attacking them.

Most of the time I choose my starter based on the fact it's a fire type and I'm happy with how they look when they've fully evolved. The exception to this would be the 4th generation: a fire monkey that knows kung-fu seemed off (and derivative) to me. Went with Turtwig instead.

Tododile and its evolutions were my first pokemon, but Cyndaquil, and especially Typhlosion are just so much better.

Anyway, I usually go for the fire type and always like them better.Except for Generation 4.
