Mario is not a children's game, it's an "everyone's game." A child's game is targeted specifically toward the little ones (case in point: the JumpStart series), whereas Mario is marketed to kids, preteens, teens, adults alike. That and you can't truthfully "grow out of" Mario once you're hooked.

I'd say it is to be honest, but only in the sense that it was designed for children. But that doesn't mean they can't be fun and entertaining for adults.

I don't think so. I think it's good for all ages. Like all truly good games that choose limit the violence, profanity and sex to get a lower classification, they appeal to all ages. Another example of such a game is Viva Pinata. That game, similarly, can be enjoyed by gamers of any age, in my opinion.

Not in my opinion .

Its a series that has something for everyone and is Family friendly.

Family friendly and a game for young children are not the same thing.

Try playing Super Mario Bros.3, Mario & Luigi:SSS, and Paper Mario:Ttyd.

Those got BRUTAL at times.

If a child has the dexterous capabilities to beat Mario Galaxy, I'd be impressed.
Even more so if they beat Mario 3.
I know I struggled for weeks.

Well it is a children's game. I mean, 90% of people who played Mario would've first played it under the ages of like 12. That's not to say that people now older wouldn't still play or buy the games out of some sort of nostalgia, loyalty or whatever moves people to buy games from the same series based on previous games.
You can say it has something for everyone or is family friendly but when it comes down to it, if Mario never existed and it was first released just now, would you still buy it? I'm guessing not.

But that doesn't really matter, the fact of the matter is that the younger audience the first games were designed for are now older. Nintendo aren't stupid and have made their games more challenging and have introduced Paper Mario as a way of keeping the series alive for older generations, while keeping the game shiny and accessible enough to attract nippers.

Absolutely not! People of all ages can enjoy Mario! Just because it's child-friendly doesn't mean it's designed specifically for children.

Definitely not. The most recent addition is proof to that, with phenomenal retro references, jokes that would go over their heads, and extended parts of sheer frustration even with the years of preceding mastery of techniques like back flipping next to a tall platform and wall kicking off of its bottom edge then spinning to regress your distance, or taking a long jump-to-wall kick combo to go for distance and height when otherwise not possible. Some of the games might be targeted towards everyone, but there's a lot to the games that neither children nor casual gamers will be able to pick up on, not to mention get past. That they included that damn Cosmic Rosalina to help you out is sheer testament to this fact--it's there to help you get past an impossible part, and even as one who has learned the many talents of Mario, she still pops up sometimes here and there. Especially taking into account a level that was designed to kill the experienced players by making the level counter-progressive to advanced techniques...

Definitely not, you can play any type of game at any age (just please don't be the senior citizen playing Dora Explorer Backpack Adventure.)

Yes because all the games can be played by children without worry of scarring them for life.

No because... well...

A children's game is one that is based off of a G rated piece of media and designed to be simple enough for the average child to complete it. Mario has been a staple franchise for years and has followed the same classic formula since it's inception. To be a fantasy setting for all ages to enjoy. Younger fans might not be able to complete it, older fans certainly will, and then the more "hardcore" or veteran gamer will find enough in the games to try and beat it 100%.

I Think Nintendo get it right when it comes to Mario - Its kiddy and bright and fun, but also quite hardcore and difficult too. Perfect balance really.

The Mario games are just games. They are timeless games, in the sense that anyone that enjoys platformers can enjoy the games. I'm pretty sure that those that were 10 to 30 can still enjoy a game of Mario Brothers 3. Those that consider Mario games 'children's games' are rather short sighted.
