I've actually been a councilor at several video game camps for kids, but we only did the real video games at night. Held tournaments and such each night, then on the weekend had an overall winner.

But we had them out swimming and playing outside games every day, so I'm all for it when it's balanced.

I don't see the point in sending a kid to a camp to play games. can't they just do that at home for cheaper?

They should make you run a mile for every 2hrs you want to play.

Both those ideas are great, only problem is I don't think to many of the kids would run.

Depends on the age. If they are 12 or under, send their asses outside! It's for their own good, really.

Now, don't take me for an old hook or a troll, but when you still have that happiness and energy in you, you can't just waste it on video games. Video games will always be there, after all.

Childhood won't.

All you gotta do is get them Halo uniforms and tell em to go play paintball. That'll get em lots of exercise, PLUS getting wacked with paintballs will make em less of a bunch of little pansies. I hate the people I know who grew up all intolerant of pain.

This is a pretty bad idea. That's different from playing at my house how? I can go outside if I want here too (I mean I don't...but I could).

C'mon! Its summer. Even my "time spent gaming" hits an all time yearly low for the summer. Those kids should be outside, or least doing mixed activites.

I actually think it's a terrible idea. Most summer camp isn't free, and I'm not going to pay to have my kid sent somewhere and do something he can do at home. Besides summer camp is about being outside and learning about teh outdoors, the only camp I would send my kid to that involved sitting around would be an educational camp.... or you know.... on of those "special" camps for my "special" child.

There should be a mixture of indoor and outdoor activity. I mean, it'd be fun for kids to get to play their favorite game, but a game of Halo freeze tag outside is also good for the childrens.

I just pictured around 22 4' tall children running around the woods in Spartan armor playing tag.
Suffice to say, it was hilarious.

Alright, alright, back to the question at hand: A good mixture. Exercise is good for everyone, I won't debate that. And they should certainly be allowed to do what they love, i.e. playing video games.

ahem.

YOU DON"T GO TO SUMMER CAMP TO DO SOMETHING YOU CAN DO AT HOME. /rant

I love videogames, I am a video gamer. I can beat you in Halo, period. But, I don't like the idea of a videogame summer camp. If I go to a summer camp, I want to go hiking, camping, swimming, etc.

In the day time, you can simulate matches of Counter Strike and TF2 outside. Or do like an RPG simulation thing.

At night, you can go inside and play LAN matches of whatever game you want.

Perfect. Now all they need to provide is the Cheetos and Coca Cola.

I can't believe people voted it would be an awful idea..... what are they even doing on this site then!? I kind of assumed a camp like that would have some kind of educational sin or something about the development of games or how to make your own or something

There should always be a healthy Mix.

However, I think just a waste of money also as kids can play games, at home, without insane price tags
But can they do it whilst making friends?

I think if the summer camp has an emphasis on the social development of kids as well, and also include some downtime from the games for some healthy exercise and perhaps some quasi-academic work (writing game reviews perhaps), then I think it's an excellent idea for a summer camp.

Great. A way for these kids to make friends with similar interests. It's quite hard to find gamers, you know. Because we're inside. Playing. Or hiding our interest to protect ourselves from ridicule. If you sent these kids to a regular camp, they'd be ridiculed and have a terrible time.
This is why these camps NEED to exist, in my opinion. Gamers, particularly the younger, nerdier types, tend to exclude themselves from sports mostly because they believe that they won't gel well with the "jock"-ish types of kids. If we want to introduce them to organized sporting/ exercise, we need to first introduce them to a friendlier, more stress free environment, which these video game camps seem to be perfect for.

So, yeah, indoor/outdoor for me.

Who needs outdoors? Just make them play DDR for an hour or two a day.

Also ultra epic LAN parties = kickassawesomepwnomgwtfbbqsauce
