Question of the Day, November 28, 2010

A week ago, Warner Bros. announced its intentions to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105532-Stake-Me-Now-Warner-Bros-Rebooting-Buffy-The-Vampire-Slayer] without creator Joss Whedon. Are you on board or not?

I'm no Buffy fan.
But apparently Joss Whedon's stuff's really good, so there'll probably be uproar from fans about his non-includence.

Same. I chose couldn't care less either way.

Who knows though, I might watch an updated version.

I'm a fan of Whedon, but not Buffy. My partner recently made me sit and watch all 7 seasons [She promised me Nathan Fillion... I didn't know he doesnt show up til the last freaking season for a whole 2 episodes, so not worth it]

I couldn't care either way if they remade it, but its all my partner keeps talking about at the moment, she's fuming about the whole thing. I think I may just hide for a few months til she calms down.

Conceptually yes, but sans cast and production team what exactly is the point? Whedon is also right in saying we've reached saturation with vampire films this year, it's very sad to see how slow producers are, and how little interest they have in public opinion to make a quick buck...

Much as I'd love to see a great reboot, the chances of it being royally screwed up are far higher - going with a 'Nay' on this one.

As someone who preferred the Buffy spinoff, "Angel", much more than Buffy, add me to the "Don't Care" list.

Seriously, I really liked Angel, and didn't care too much for Buffy.

From what I understood, they want to make a movie, not a series. That would be OK I guess, the Buffy movie was actually terrible.
Either way, compared to the series it will stink if they don't get any of the actors or the production team, especially the writers.

In concept though, I'm very much against it. Rebooting a great series is a dumb idea, and only a solution if you want do use the name and the concept, but just plain rape everything else, by adapting it to a modern trend everyone else is caching in on. I've seen it done to Knight Rider two years ago and Stargate last year. Good Lord did those sink.

Nay. I won't watch it and I don't even think I'll be vaguely interested, but it's just a bad idea, and I'm opposed to it from a philosophical standpoint.

You shouldn't reboot/remake something less than seven years old unless you have an entirely new direction to go with it, or you think you can tell an exciting story. Joss Whedon has already given us seven years of exciting stories related to the concept, and as a lot of people like to point out by the end there really wasn't that much left that he could do with the concept, so why someone thinks they can do better is beyond me.

I'm not particualrly a Joss Whedon fanboy but I am a Buffy fanboy, and I just think that this idea is really bad.

Look, the vampires in Buffy at least drank blood occasionally and tried to enslave humanity or do random acts of evil. And they didn't sparkle.

This should be one step to recovering after the Twilight madness.

I'd like to see Buffy back on because I always liked it. But, I'm not sure if I'm in favour because theres no garentee that what we get is going to be what we expect with how vampires are being portrayed thanks to twilight and the hundreds of other vampire stuff lingering around... But I would give it a chance!

I said "yay" simply because Joss Whedon is not on board pretty much due to his own choices. It's not like he's being cut out.

My big problem here is that I think "Buffy" works better as a TV series than as a movie. I'm less excited about a theatrical release, than if they say they were making a pilot to try and do a new TV series.

To be honest, looking at what shows like "Sanctuary" have done with green screen and computer generated FX/enviroments, it might be interesting to see what they could do with Buffy nowadays. Part of the appeal was always the costumes and somewhat cheezy monster FX, but it makes me wonder what a more elaborate take on the subject might look like. Could they say capture the campy Buffy vibe, and make the scenarios more genuinely scary or at least creepy? Looking at the "Sanctuary" tech, and what we've seen with "The Walking Dead" it's possible. I'd prefr to have Joss Whedon on board, but that doesn't seem like it's liable to ever happen.

At any rate the old Cristie Swanson movie was kind of at odds with the TV series to begin with, despite some referances, so remaking that storyline on it's own isn't anything I could object to in principle.
