Devil's backbone suffered the same problem as The Orphanage, namely being well directed but awkwardly paced & full of twists that contradicted previous events.
Oh really? And what would they be?
Well The Devil's Backbone seemed to spend the whole film going down the same road as Pan's Labyrinth, namely:

That the fairytale is just the fantasies of a small child desperate to escape the horrible reality of her life

But then all of a sudden:

The dead old man turns into a magic ghost who saves the children from the nasty men

The Orphanage suffered from trying to be Don't Look Now except:

the mother screams at people a lot chasing what she thinks is her son, but then thinks it is the ghost of the dead kid of the woman she thinks has kidnapped her son, but then turns out she is just plain old insane & it's all her imagination, her son having died because he couldn't handle her not believing he had an imaginary friend so he attacked her in the bathroom then got himself locked in the cellar (which we already knew & had to spend nearly 2hours waiting for her to figure it out)...:?

Speaking of, when can I put Splice on my shelf?

Though, on point, Pan's Labyrinth would be cool.

I'm with the 'none of them' crowd.

I'd much rather have him do something new that is designed to be a game, not a movie mimicking a game.

...I'm horribly confused now, as I can't remember either of the events you were talking about - and I've seen it recently.

The old guy dies watching out for the bad guys, allowing them to sneak in & lock up the kids. Then the ghost of said old guy unlocks the door for them, & the film finishes with him watching them walk off into the distance.
Before the final 1/4 of the film the only ghost is the dead kid, with the ambiguity of whether he a real ghost or simply the imagination of boys dealing with being left by their parents at an isolated orphanage during the civil war by making up stories. Then of course we get the 3rd act exposition of:
"oh btw I saw what happened it was the nasty man who killed him while looking for treasure but I didn't tell anyone because I'm a scared child lol"

& it just gets sillier from there.

I don't think it does. For my money, the whole symbolism of the orphanage is that it's trapped in Limbo (hence the UXB) and it's slowly being destroyed by those that are trapped in it - but as it dies, it kills those that are trapped, letting free those that fought against it.

It's symbolic of the Spanish Civil War where the war itself (represented by the bomb) destroyed those around it, rather than due to it.

Or at least that's my take - Depending on your PoV, you could explain it otherways.

If done right, Hellboy would be a decent action game. Pan's Labyrinth would be a great Silent Hill/Amnesia style horror game.
