Well giving work late from personal experiences as well as acquired knowledge is never solved by letting get helped last minute, letting the person get the harsh reality of what will happen when they leave it late is the only way to make them regretting doing most the time.
I know too many people who know they will be given a second chance again and again, or try to do a last minute work, and they never learn from that last experiences, if they get punished for it, then they will remember not to do it more clearly, and avoid the entire last min situation.

Not everyone is going to respond to punishment in the way you predict, and so I feel that citing it as the ONLY solution is quite narrow minded.

Understand, none of this is meant as an insult. I thought of that response, believe me, and then decided it was better to respond with this:

At least you're just asking for a suggestion for your topic, and not asking us to do all of the work for you, as I've seen on here before. Still, you haven't told us what class it's for so we're left to assume it's English. You haven't given us any input at all. Also, the Escapist attracts a multinational following of tweens, teens, young adults and thirtysomethings. Are you in the 6th grade or are you a junior in college? This sort of information would be helpful if you want your teacher to think that you've done all the work yourself (in other words, if you want to pass).

Are we really so spoiled and spoonfed that we have to ask others to think for us now?

Sorry. I came in here to chat for a few minutes and then play games for an hour before studying the surgeries I'm scrubbing in on tomorrow. I don't have time to help you do the work you should be doing for yourself.

This isn't 20 lashes, it's getting penalized for a late half arsed essay.
He isn't suddenly told the punishment or it needs to be in, he willingly left it and asking late causing this situation.

Well... If it were me I would look at old science vs. new science such as: Phrenology and neurology, astrology and astronomy, chemistry and alchemy, or magic and physics. Something like that, you get the idea. Then again maybe that just interests me, maybe you should take a walk get some blood flowing and don't stress your brain to death. Yeah but what is better?

1): A world in which people do things because they understand that those things are necessary?
or
2): A world in which people do things to avoid getting punished?

If someone does something wrong, you can't merely adopt the 'punish him till he stops' attitude or he will start doing the right thing merely to avoid being punished, not because it is the right thing to do.

Impress upon him that by not working he is harming noone but himself and he will stop. It is only when you punish him that he will never truly learn.
