You know, like three years ago, when you were but a wee 3 years younger version of what you are now. I'm guessing you hadn't heard of the Fallout games by then. Then came along Fallout 3 and now everyone is like 'Its the best franchise ever' and 'It redefined gaming back then'.

Does this seem familiar to you and more importantly what do you think about it?

It's kinda weird to me how games that were kinda unknown before now get applauded as redefining the genre while the people didn't know about it until Fallout 3 was released..

Even worse are the self proclaimed Fallout fans who spout what I said above with a straight face.

Ofcourse this is just how I see it and I wasnt gaming when the first fallouts were released but this is as I said how it appears to me.

Well you started off completely wrong.
I played both Fallouts upon their respective releases, as well as Tactics (A guilty pleasure of mine). They were fantastic, excellent games. Still are. These games might have been unknown to you, but that's probably because you either:

A) a new gamer
or
B) Too young to remember.

And one can forgive you for both of those things, but don't say Fallout was 'unknown', because it absolutely was not. It was critically acclaimed, well received, and a huge title for WRPGs in the 90s. I like 'em both better than Fallout 3, actually.

Pretty much this.

It's not abnormal for a franchise to get a lot of attention when a new installment is released.

Im 18 now, and in fairness Fallout 3 was the first ever Fallout title I'd head of and owned. I also owned Brotherhood of Steel on PS2 but was unaware that was Fallout material too.

Hmm I was afraid of that but still it annoys me that 'young' gamers who weren't around to game back then are now skipping around spouting what I said while they weren't even around to see it happen. It's like if I were to say 'toys were way more enjoyable 15 years ago, they redefined toys as a whole!' right now.. (As least thats what it seems like to me..)

I don't think I have seen too many people claiming that it is the best franchise ever. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the first 2 were unknown but they were less popular than fallout 3.

Well posers will always be posers.
You can't stop it, and you can't help it.
Let them be the insecure posers they are.

Oh god no. I've read almost everything there is on the fallout wikia about the first two, and it seems they are much better games.
I'm actually sick of the people you describe, I run into them enough.

I love the original 2 Fallout games, and do find it a little hard to accept Fallout 3 as a true successor to those games. However, I would bet that most 'new' gamers (horrible term, but couldn't think of anything better) would have the reverse opinion, that the old Fallout games are boring, with shitty graphics and aren't a patch on the newer game. I'd bet those talking about the original games being 'genre defining' haven't played them and never would.

I recall playing the first Fallout demo right around 97, a short while before the game came out. I replayed it over and over and over. Then I managed to get it and didn't stop playing until Fallout 2 came out the next year. And yes they enjoyed ridiculous critical acclaim. It seemed whenever I went to pick up either copy of the games, it was the last one there. But yes, ever since the frat boys got 360s and started to play video game has been sadly dumbed down. Irrelevant point though.
Maybe if I had never played Oblivion, or even maybe Fallout 1+2, then I would have like and could still play Fallout 3. Too much of it seemed like a re skinning of Oblivion, although a good re skinning at that. Anyway though, the intelligence of the game was just gone...humor and otherwise. It just felt like a stupider game in its writing and story. And as always I don't like how Bethesda promises scale but delivers a map I can realistically run across in mere minutes. I know its just a portion of DC but still.
The black humor of the series became somehow retarded. Instead of the government and Vault-Tec looking insidious, they come across as completely incompetent, and that may seem funny at first, how is it possible for them to have accomplished any of these 'unspeakable acts'.
To summarize, I watched the little making of DVD I got with my copy of the game, and one of those Bethesda guys said something along the lines of this being their game now their baby or some such nonsense. And their right. They bought it they own it. Its never going to be the same again (maybe when Obsidian release New Vegas) but by and large, the Fallout genre is dead and someone else has assumed it identity. Forever. And I blame the lack of competition in the sandbox rpg (genre??).

Personally it wasn't the graphics but the gameplay that put me off the old Fallout games. I don't know what in particular but it just didn't get to me. It is not that you are too free nor that the control scheme in particular is bad nor the story, because it was quite okay.. I just don't know why :p

As comparison, I very much enjoy the games Geneforge and (blades of)Exile/Avernum) and they look terrible and Geneforge controls kinda the same as Fallout.

Well, teh only one I played before Fallout 3 was Fallout 2, and I enjoyed it a lot. Sadly about 2 years ago my hard drive crashed and I lost the disk, and I couldn't find the game anywhere to buy.

Now thanks to Good old Games, and a credit card for my birthad, I'm enjoying Fallout 1, 2, and to a lesser extent, tactics.

Why do care so much? I've never understood this childish obsession with what other people say or do. So they are claiming to be Fallout fans and you don't think they are...why do you care so much? Besides which, how do you know if people have or have not played the original games, just because they are young doesn't mean they haven't played old games...

In short, why do you care so much, and why is it a bad thing that these games are getting a greater level of attention?
