Ok did anyone else hear that the game alien vs predator was not going to be sold in australia for its "trophy kill" system, baisicly a series of kills where you pull out spines, stab eyes, crush heads...you know classic AvP stuff.

The vote was overturned and now the game is being sold in australia......as an R-15

so whats happend is this

Censorship: urgh your game is so gory and kids might copy this, if we market this who knows how long it will take kids to start using there barbed tales to stab soldiers in the face we shall never sell this

Rebelion studios (i think): Oh come on

Censorship: Fine.....but to make sure no impresionable youngsters can get it we shall market it to 15 year olds......

i seriously dont understand the logic in this

Seriously Mr atkinson, make an R-18

so what do you guys think about this

My mind is constantly blown at how individuals in power can be so blind when everyone else can see an obvious solution to a problem... and in this case are not unvocal about it.

Why go through the trouble of trying to get a game banned then turn around and sell it to 15 and up? Awful strange...

Anyone over the age of 18 should basically be unaffected by this "ban" that Atkinson has imposed. If over the age of 18 you should have the ability to order games online, which costs less than shops and is not restricted.

So basically, if you are old enough to play R-18 games, the "ban" shouldn't affect you. Meaning that all it does is prevent young kids from getting their hands on adult material. This is a good thing.

Atkinson, I salute you.

It was allowed here, because the moronic OFLC only ban popular games (see Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Dead Space, Modern Warfare 2, Alien Vs Predator (it was highly anticipated, until it came out).
I've been saying for years that they only ever ban popular games.
They didn't give a shit about Left 4 Dead until it got popular, then they banned the second one and gave us the watered down piss version.
This bullshit with the AvP game just further proves my point.

You're missing the point. Because there is no R-18 rating, and because the government's banning habits are wildly inconsistent, games that are rated M here are often just rated 15+ in Australia instead being banned. So yes, it is letting kids get their hands on "adult material".

Does your government have a meeting and a vote whenever a violent or sexual game comes out?

Okay, stop right there. I agree with you on the first two parts. But Atkinson is definately not worthy of a salute. This is a man who releases an under the table law saying that R rated movies have to be sold in plain packaging, yet cries foul when it looks like the public opinion isn't going to swing his way. This is also a man who says gamers are a small minority imposing their will on society when he has been doing the exact same thing since he got elected. As long as the ratings are enforced by the retailers, R-18+ games should be allowed into the country. Australian gamers deserve better than cut down bastardized versions of the hot titles that the rest of the world has. And sure they might be able to get them over Steam, but for how long, considering that internet filter the government wants to put up. And games are more often than not region coded, so they wouldn't work down under unless you have a console to match.

So no. Atkinson does not deserve a salute.

then by judgeing the content and how its presented the game is given a rating

3+, 12+, R-15 or R-18 (there are others but they are the most commen)

MA 15+ Sir, MA15+ not R15+.

It boasts the same kind of restrictions, but it would be nice to have the facts completely correct.

Gamers 4 Croydon better win..

id like them too but the unfortuant turth is they probably wont

atkinson can say whatever he wants about gamers because of all the dickhead martyrs who commit a crime and then say it was because of a videogame

Gamers 4 Croyden can only go on facts, atkinson can lie

Wait wait wait. So Australia doesn't allow an R-18+ for how long? And now all of a sudden they get a rating system that's even better than what we have here in North America
WTF!?
Good for them I guess......now we need to get an R-15+.

Yes, but while Atkinson has been busy with the R18+ debate, Gamers 4 Croydon are campaigning long and hard. In the last week, they have had 3 major interviews about their policies that are not only about video games, but an urge to stop politicians abusing their power that they they have been doing since this concept was introduced.

Hell, there motto is 'People first, politicians second' on a scale that will try to appeal to the people. With Atkinson ironically trying to smear there campaign by saying that they will smear his campaign, they will come off like the 'underdog good guys'.

To reiterate, I don't expect them to win, but then again, it would a great push and surprise if they did.

We've had loads of similar topics to this, on every thread about Michael Atkinson, but I shall say what I always say: Cuckoo! The guy is bonkers. How did he even get voted in in the first place, were his policies stop everything bad in the world?
