Pretty much all groups in the past felt that they were the best and everyone else was beneath them. The Japanese and the Chinese (the ones IN japan and china, I mean. The ones who are raised outside the country don't seem so prone to it) seem to hate and despise each other, but no one calls them out on it. The idea that only white people are racist or that white people invented racism is stupid. Look at the Black Panther party, I mean they are probably worse than the KKK as far as motives go. Look at what they are preaching http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vbwc_blackhitler_politics.
In any case, the only reason that people are taught to hate a specific group of people is for political gain. Hitler did it so he could take over Germany (and eventually the world, supposedly), the KKK did it to ensure that their communities remained conservative (although seeing brown people as inferior being probably had something to do with it), Mao Ze Tong did to Capitalists so he wouldn't be contested (gotta mix in some non-whites somewhere).
As humans, we automatically try and find patterns so we can understand the world around us, ie fire is hot, that thing tastes good, etc etc. When europeans found a group of people that are technologically and sociologically millennia behind them without any anomalies, do you think that it's any surprise that they thought of them as a lesser people? It may not be ethical, but it's just how we humans think. All we can hope to do is try and not apply that thought process to people and start thinking that skin color correlates to behavior.
