why did he check it with a geiger counter?
It's common praxis here. The problem was discovered many years ago that mushrooms are contaminated and before eating or selling game you have to check it, as the animals have to eat 10 times the mass to build their own body mass. Therefore the animals' concentration of radioactive particles can be up to 10 times compared to the mushrooms' one(which we are also advised not to eat).

The problem is that there are many, many accidents in nuclear plants each year that never make it into the media. Also, the main issue with nuclear energy is with the waste it produces, and how we lack ways of safe long-term storage.
Basically it boils down to this: If someone f*cks up in a nuclear plant, the'll f*ck up badly.
Not being argumentative here, but how many accidents happen in coal plants? how about gas turbines? oil fueled ones? Wouldn't have liked to be near THIS [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmM3KQnFmXs].

Ok, so none of the above can horribly pollute thousands of square miles for decades, but there are accidents in ANY industry and the fact that there have only been a handful of notable nuclear accidents (3 mile island, chernobyl and windscale being the only ones to mind) is probably far less than any other industry. You also have to realise that those can all be blamed on either new technology (windscale) or serious human error (chernobyl).

The BP oil spill this year is listed by wikipedia as only being the 4th largest. So far I'd say nuclear has a better track record than oil.

You know why these accidents never make it into the media? Because they're almost always responsible for no deaths or injuries whatsoever. Also, regarding nuclear waste, the fact is that we don't want to get rid of it entirely; it contains a huge amount of energy that could still be tapped, particularly if breeder reactors were used. Nuclear waste isn't contained in as massive quantities as some people would have you think either; a nuclear fuel loading is only a few kilograms in mass.
Yep. Stick to fission until we perfect fusion power, then we're in the golden land of uber energy.

Coulda been awesome if it bit him though... Boarman, boarman, does whatever a boar can... whatever the fuck that is...
The ability to stab people with three foot long tusks! The ability to annoyingly squeal like a pig!

Just another story that'll put people off supporting nuclear power now and in the future.

Kinda cool though....radioactive boar. He could fight crime!
I suspect the fact that he's currently classified as "meat" would probably reduce his effectiveness.

Right, most accidents don't kill or injure people. What I wanted to say is that the potential of some of those accidents (we've had several fires near or in reactors in the last few years in Germany) to kill/injure people is much higher than, let's say, one in a coal plant.

And about nuclear waste: Germany is currently dealing with the aftermath of bad decisions on where to put it, as the old salt mine a LOT of waste was put in is flooding with salt water. Nobody can say what effect this will have on the ground water. So again, the potential to hurt people with nuclear waste is very high, even with only a couple of kilograms, and especially when it is accumulated into big piles.

Oh yeah....wellll I bet there's another boar or two lurking around the place that are irradiated. Probably.

That would be the same coal plant which produces particulate pollution which can cause lung damage, and the same coal plant that produces something on the order of 100 times the population effective dose of radiation of a comparable nuclear power plant? Somehow, I think you underestimate the potential harmfulness of coal power.
I was referring to the damage potential of a fatal accident in coal plants vs. nuclear reactors. In a coal plant, some workers would die. When there's a fatal accident in a nuclear power plant, thousands will likely die or be injured right away, plus another couple of thousand in the aftermath.

Just to make this clear: I wouldn't have anything against nuclear power if all reactors were on the newest security standards AND if we had a safe and generally implemented way to deal with the waste.

aww, i misread the title and thought it said "Radioactive BEAR in Germany"...

still, it is rather cool...just not as cool as a Radioactive Bear...

I guess there could be a bear getting bitten by the boars becoming radioactive bearboar
