A straight forward question: what are your thoughts on "Rage"?

I'm a nostalgic fan of id games, from the days of Doom and Wolfenstein, and I've been meaning to pick this up, as it's quite cheap and looks interesting. But I'd like to hear my fellow gamers' thoughts on it.

I thought it was pretty unremarkable. It's a good time, but after it's over you'll go to bed and forget all about it.

Its a solid game but I got bored of it very quickly and stopped playing. The graphics are quite pretty though, despite the absolutely terrible texture pop in. Its a decent game but doesn't have much soul to it.

Decent shooter with some fun guns and ammo combinations. Also loved the different engineering gadgets, but the story was very mediocre with a bad ending. Worth playing if you can get it cheap though.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with Benpasko. It's fun, but leaves no real lasting impression at all. The plot and characters are forgettable, the environments bland. Id' recommend renting it if you can, but otherwise, grab it on sale when it's really cheap.

Its crappy and nothing at all like IDs' classic franchises. I played it for about ten minutes then boredom set in.

For just coming on here, I think you could've said a BIT more in detail.

OT: Anyway, I'm a bit more forgiving than most about some franchises. The first thing is: I enjoyed myself killing things and such like that there. (There was alot of the killing.) You see, Id's not really a plot-centric company to begin with. They gave us Doom. To my mind, it's a solid enough game that mostly just suffers from "It might be a cold day in hell first before we pick up that sequel plan.", but then Id sort of IS hell (Again, 'cause of Doom.), so who's to say? Any case, I liked the setup, the designs, the weapons... Kind of a shame you only get to use the big shiny once. That part's a letdown. I had fun, though, something lots of people forget to have.

It looks beautiful (for a wasteland), the shooting is solid (in that it works properly, with a few above average weapons), and racing that I only did when it made me. Also, the ending is absolutely awful. In short, it's ok... Not great, not terrible... It's just ok.

I enjoyed it, especially how each and every npc from that game was practically glowing personality. I think it accomplished what it set out to do to make a shooter high on the fun factor despite its terrible ending. I felt absolutely no buyers remorse playing it through twice. My one gripe with the game is that as soon as you get improved wingsticks you might as well be playing on easy no matter what difficulty your on. They were THAT powerful.

As someone previously said, it's unremarkable. It's like a non cell shaded version of Borderlands, except not as good as Borderlands.

It's a decent time-waster and you can get it for cheap. It's not gonna blow you away. My favorite part was the minigame with the zombies and dice.

Pretty game, nice animation, but very forgettable. I went into this game after playing Borderlands, and it just seemed too small. If a company is going to make another Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic game, it needs to be open world unless it's expressly advertised otherwise. The scale just wasn't there and the few truly huge fights you get are largely by the numbers "use that new weapon you just got to kill the big thing" scenarios. No real strategy beyond ducking behind a wall when crap's flying at you. Also the weapon selection is severely limited to archetypes with variable ammunition. No BFGs, laser rifles, or Matrix-style electric cannons to be had here, just MG, shotgun, pistol, sniper rifle. /yawn

I lost interest after a few hours, glad i only borrowed it. Which is a shame because the actual shooting was really good (great animation, decent AI). It just lacked the interesting weapons and charm of ID's past games or similar games (fallout, borderlands) :/

I think i read something that described it as " a really good tech demo". I think thats quite accurate.

It is shockingly average, one of the most average games I can think of.
By now I expect the launch problems to be ironed out so the rest I can best describe as half Borderlands half Fallout, sadly stuck in the middle where you can discern no flavor.
They went with a gray-brown world so one would expect a heavy atmosphere but it's really fast paced and you are a super soldier from the start, also bloody immortal, however instead of the last stand mechanic you switch to a black screen to do some QTE.
The guns are something out of CoD(really dull), and the open world is actually a collection of very tightly controlled narrow corridors, you can only go where the game wants you to at the specific point in time.
And the story is equally split, they wittily try to make the impression of a desperate world but when you are an unstoppable force that just doesn't affect you at all.

The really odd thing is this game is a technical marvel(once patched anyway), they made a whole new tech for incremental texture streaming that will probably be used for the next decade, their AI/animation is beautifully reactive to everything they do, and the gameplay is tighter on this then any other open world game.
And if it was made for PC it would possibly rival Crysis on looks.

I got bored before I reached the end, a big part of that was because of the races. They are optional, but being the completionist that I am, I felt I had to do them. In all, I think I spent more time racing than I did shooting. As for the shooting, it's pretty standard and a bit bland with the same old weapons that have been around since the dawn of shooters. It has some interesting secondary items, but they tend to fall into the catogories of "useful, plentyful and boring" or "rare, lackluster and fun". What that means is that you don't use the fun items much and end up stockpiling them, which seems a waste.

Enviroments are nice enough, but only two stood out for me really: the trip into the old city filled with mutants and the Smash TV section. The rest just seemed to be comprised of garages and ruins and weren't very memorable.

Enemies are pretty indistinct and are either bandits, bandits with shields or elite bandits. Then there are a range of mutant creatures which are more interesting and probably why the old city stage stood out from the rest.

I didn't like any of the NPCs much and the way quests were handed out always had me questioning why the hell I was helping them. For example, I'd enter an area and the local boss would tell me that if I wanted to stay I'd better get in his good books. The only way that was going to happen was if I went and ended the stalemate with his rival that had been going on for years by singlehandedly killing the boss fella, all his men and giving his territory over to the quest giver. Not asking much is he? All the time threatening to have you killed if you don't do it. It's just stupid logic that broke any sense of immersion for me.

I wouldn't recomend the game really. Seems like bargin bin material. I think I paid £12 or so in a sale for it. I certainly wouldn't pay more than this and in my estimation is probably worth about £8.

Going by level design, personality, and look and feel alone I should have loved the game, but for whatever reason I stalled about 80% of the way through and never picked it up again.

My main problem with it was a combination of tiered ammo and cover based shooting. In theory cover based shooting should have been fine as well, but when you get to the point where you have no choice but to craft high level ammo and lack the combonents, it's a *****.

Seriously, nothing enrages me more than spending 3 minutes behind cover and blowing multiple clips worth of headshots to bring a single mook down.

Game works best when fighting muties, just stock up on shotgun clips and circle strafe to your heart's content. There just wasn't enough of that to fill in the running time.

It is the epitome of mediocrity.
Meh shooting, good sound assets, terrific animation quality and a disappointing story and ending.
The best bits in it are the Easter Eggs, which are parts of id's good IPs, namely Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D.

If you're planning on getting it on PS3, don't. It's a buggy mess. It constantly freezes, forcing you to do a hard reset, and the game has trouble loading the textures properly despite the 8GB install, so the environments look fucking horrible. I don't know if other systems have it better, but the PS3 version is utter shit.

Oh and the story is like Fallout fanfiction written by 15-year-olds. It's embarrassing.
