It never used to be like that and the forgetful mainstream audience are to blame for that one. Features have been around in rap for a long, long time, but it was usually only on one or two songs out of 15-17 tracks. During the mid 90s, it got to the point where people bought rap albums just for the featured artists. It still happens on the mainstream stuff, but the underground is typically solos with a couple of features. It's like rock groups that bring in other guitarists or drummers. I don't know how often that happens, but I know it does. Hell, Apocalyptica does it with singers.

I don't hate rap as a whole, I just highly dislike mainstream rap. I prefer the kind of rap that a radio wouldn't DARE play on their air waves. I prefer rappers and groups like Prozak, Twiztid, ABK, Esham, and Tech N9ne.

I don't listen to a ton of it honestly, but I'm definately not against a good song, regardless of genre. When I do listen to it, it's mostly Eminem, Biggie, or one of the "top 40" songs.

I was listening to some music earlier, and I'll admit I'm a huge rap fan, and I notice a lot of Escapists' are against rap as a whole. Can anyone give me some reasons for the rap hate?

I completely agree. I dislike Rap and what it stands for and just plain how it sounds but I still respect it as a legitimate music genre. Which is more then I can say for ANY pop song nowadays

Pretty much the only rap artist that i like is Eminem, he's got a good amount of good songs and recently Till I Colaplse as hooked my like heroine, im always listeing to it.

But the whole other area of the genra i seem to dislike, the songs that are all about rape and drugs and shit just get really annoying.

I don't Understand this at all. I hear a lot of people say that they hate rap because its mysoginistic and about violence and drugs and then they turn around and say that they like Eminem, an artist who has some of the most mysoginistic and violent songs that include drug references.

I strongly dislike gangsta rap, which is probably what most people here think of with rap. And I don't blame them, it seems to be the popular sub-genre and has some of the worst lyrics ever recorded.

I'm not really a fan of rap, but I can go with some political rap and nerdcore. Also, I kinda like some of Eminem's songs (I don't think he's a gangsta rapper, he just curses a lot).

I think it's the whole 'gangsta' thing. That seems to dominate rap at the moment, and it's so mind-numbingly, depressingly and deliberately unintelligent that most people don't attempt to associate with rap of any kind.

Most of the lyrics are downright stupid, like most of the new stuff. It's like they're not even trying. But good rap is good rap like Ivan Ives [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeb6joKc-IA] and Rakim. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMFsfYTiC24] Keep in mind that the Ivan Ives music video is very very offensive.

Chill out, dude. I'm just giving an example that not all rap music is bad. Sure, my choice of words could've been better, but I'm not forcing anyone to check out the video. Watch it or don't, I'll still be able to sleep either way.

i listen to a couple of rap songs that have barely any cursing on them. i like them. but racist and often obscene language doesnt appeal to me. and no not all rap is like that, just the majority.

I love it. My first rap album was Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five - Stepping Off which must be about 25 years ago. I prefer old school as the majority of new rap sucks ass.

You think thats bad, for my formal video (thousands of pictures of us put in a slideshow with music showing our time at school) Tik Tok was playing...a song about a drunken slut wanting guys to feel her up...how the fuck is that fitting?
Mainly has to do with all the mainstream shit that people hear, all mainstream artist are bad representations of their genre. Such as how Green Day and Fallout Boy are the most known Rock bands amongst teens.
I fucking hate mainstream...

Unfortunately, that's what happens on television too these days. An editor or producer takes a popular rap song and tries their hardest to fit it into their broadcast, especially with sports. It's all in an effort to gain viewers. I can only imagine they do it with other genres too, but I only really notice the rap.
