Really? But covering an issue that's really a HUGE problem that no one is really talking aboutis what art does, doesn't it?
What the new Tomb Raider is doing is what shlock-action movies do.

Rape is overdone? I seem to have missed that in gaming.
Well not in gaming but certainly in films. You get the same plot devices in both forms of media so what's overdone in one isn't going to be new and original in the other.

But then again, so is 99% of videogame writing and movie scripts too. Shouldn't upset anyone anymore. Love the internet drama though.
Yeah I'm hardly going to lose sleep over it but just because everyone else is lazy too doesn't mean I can't call one game out for it.

why can't i see into the future like so many others can? D:

And why this sudden "attachment" to the original lara's "character". Isn't this the same woman who was disliked for having unrealistic proportions and generally looking like a living doll? This same character who's games have generally been met with ho-hum responces and has limped along this last generation?

I wasn't even aware tomb raider really HAD a story, it was THAT transparant.

Even if it's not sexist (men can be raped too, remember), it's still wrong. And lazy storytelling.

I'm suprised nobodies mad about the rape thing for the same reasons as me. I don't really care if they put it into a game as a story element but what bothers me is the fact that they are advertising the rape. They're using rape as a way to stir up useless controversy about their game.

And that is unacceptable.
Stir up controversy? They've already shown the "rape" at E3 scene and nobody copped it until the word was specifically said.

http://www.gamesradar.com/controversial-tomb-raider-rape-scene-youve-already-seen-it/

This "rape scene" nonsense is just more sensationalist bullshit that's being spouted in order for people to get their panties in a bunch.

There is absolutely no point to putting something this in a game unless it is the defining moment of a character. I hope we're not seriously trying to say that Lara Croft is the way she is, a strong female character, because she once got raped. That's retarded.

I do find it funny though that the game still looks less interesting than the 2007 "Uncharted" which it clearly wants to be.

What is lazy storytelling and how is attempted rape lazy story telling.
Er... sorry about that. Maybe I should have been clearer. I mean, it's easy to say a character was raped, but it's difficult to do it well. Or something, I should really think before I write things...

People just like to complain. Hell, I know I do at time.

I remember when people would point to old Lara as what was wrong with gaming and now they point to her to say "this is what we want!".
Damned if you, damned if you don't these days XD

No, it's a defining moment for her character because that attempted rape leads to her killing another human being for the first time. Something that you'd know if you looked up any information at all regarding it.

That second part isn't a stab at you, more a stab at people in general because all of the people decrying the game are doing so simply because they heard the word "rape" while having no information at all regarding the context of that point in the story.

fair-- I just don't think it has a place in games. It just seems wrong somehow. However, the trailer only suggests he places a hand and then she beats the snot out of him which is fine!

It may turn out that in this instance it is handled well, but, call me a cynic, i see this as not flowing well in a game. You have a cut scene in which you can't react to it (Which could mirror the trauma... but again I doubt it.) Or as has been said you could have a tasteless QTE.

not to make light of the original subject matter but don't both portrayals of the event fall into the traps of things that interrupt gameplay? If you wanted to deal with a subject like rape the actions/shooter/platformer drama seems like an odd place to do it. I'm having trouble imaging how you would transition into and out of this scene and go back to having fun running around in temples.

So while depicting rape isn't inherently sexist, and this instance may not be sexist or lazy writing or any of the other charges leveled against it... I'm just not sure it is going to work well.

I could be wrong and the whole thing could be brilliantly done and be a powerful scene that changes the way we think about rape/gaming/the character... but

... (mobile phones make longer posts really difficult)

But I'm not going to hold my breath or spend my limited cash to find out for myself. If in the end it is done well, when the game comes out feel free to message me and tell me how wrong I was. But since i don't have unlimited funds I have to make a choice on what I know.

Uriel what about your last thread with the same title [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.378747-Raping-Female-Characters-Is-Not-Sexist#14820597]? Well anyway, my thoughts are there.

Judging by the date on the two posts, it looks like a garden variety accidental double post to me.

^ Second that.

As a story elemnt, it can easily define a character & actually impact the player of the game, but putting in the trailer sounds fishy.
